Chapter 106
Carrie couldnโt help but scoff. โWho wants to talk with you?โ
โCarrie, I messed up, and I understand your anger. But I sincerely want to apologize. Will you forgive me?โ Shelia said pitifully, tears streaming down her face.
Wendy tugged at Carrie, who reluctantly sat back down.
โYou both know the school revoked my scholarship. Lifeโs been tough, and I canโt always rely on my boyfriend. This meal will be paid for with my own money,โ Shelia said, biting her lip and looking deeply hurt.
Wendy and Carrie, having heard about Sheliaโs scholarship loss, softened a little.
โIโll do anything to get your forgiveness. Carrie, I know youโve been through a lot lately. Iโm willing to find the Inspection Team and confess. Just please donโt ignore me.โ
Carrie turned her head away, swayed by Sheliaโs words. After all, they had been best friends for three years. If not for Shelia falsely accusing her in front of the Inspection Team, their friendship wouldnโt have soured so drastically.
โIf you confess your mistake to the Inspection Team, weโll forgive you,โ Wendy said, her pragmatism preventing her from simply accepting Sheliaโs empty promise.
Shelia looked determined. โOkay, Iโll do it for the sake of your forgiveness.โ
Seeing Sheliaโs earnestness, the two stopped their sarcastic remarks. Debra couldnโt help but raise an eyebrow. Shelia has got some moves after all, she thought. But lies were still lies, bound to be exposed sooner or later.
โI heard thereโs a jewelry banquet hosted by your family tonight,โ Debra suddenly asked.
โSeems like it,โ Jordan replied. He didnโt care much about such things; Andrew always handled family matters.
โI remember these two, Carrie and Wendy. Their families run small businesses, right?โ Debra asked.
โNot sure. Not interested,โ Jordan replied casually, prompted only by Debraโs apparent interest. โAre you investigating them?โ
โNot exactly. Can I ask you a favor?โ
โWhat kind?โ Jordan adjusted his sleeves. โTo stand up for you, orโฆ?โ
โI want you to have someone deliver two invitations for me,โ Debra replied.
Jordan froze. โIs that all?โ
โYes,โ Debra confirmed.
She was satisfied with the meal, but Jordan felt frustrated. He was the second son of the Potter family, and all Debra wanted was for him to deliver two invitations. Despite his displeasure, Jordan had someone handle it promptly that afternoon.
That evening, Debra picked out a burgundy dress for the banquet. It wasnโt extravagant, but striking enough. As Debra emerged in her chosen attire, Marion was suddenly reminded of their first auction. She looked born to wear this color; only she could make such a vibrant dress look elegant and noble.
