“Haven’t I?” Theda sneered. “If I’m right, you probably aimed to use Lester’s scandal to bring down my company, but that was within my expectations. How much he earns or loses doesn’t matter. The Nichols Group is what I’m aiming at.”

“I can tear up the contract, but you can’t hurt Erica or my other friends,” Debra said.

Theda smiled. “Sure thing. I’m a person of my word. If you don’t trust me, we can sign an agreement and make it official.”

“A deal it is. The Nichols Group is all yours, but don’t celebrate so soon. Even without this company, I can still take you down,” Debra said.

Theda shrugged. “We’ll see.”

She watched Debra leave in defeat and smiled.

Garland grabbed Juan and pulled him into the corner. He demanded, “Explain yourself. Who are you helping?”

Instead of answering his question, Juan swatted away his hand.

“Answer me. Who are you helping? Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for Theda,” Garland pressed.

“This is not your concern. And remember, we’ve never met,” Juan replied lazily, turning to leave.

Garland blocked his path. “You’ve got to tell me. I need to know who you really care about so I won’t take the wrong side. Debra’s been good to me, and I think she’s a decent person. As for Theda… There’s something off about her. Tell me your plan.”

“This is enough,” Juan frowned. “They’re leaving. Just go with Liza and don’t let them catch on to anything.”

With that, he strode away, leaving Garland stunned in place. He couldn’t comprehend the current situation. “I don’t get it.”

Liza found him and called out, “Garland, I’ve been looking for you forever. Come on. Debra and the others have already left.”

“They left? How are we getting back?”

“I don’t know.” Liza looked lost. Usually, she was driven everywhere, and if it wasn’t shopping, she didn’t even need to walk.

Back at the Potter Mansion, Erica still looked apprehensive. Debra remembered something Erica had once told her. Erica’s father killed her mother and paid with his own life. Erica inherited Hunter Mathis’ shares in the Mathis Group, but she hadn’t revealed how he had died. Though Erica didn’t explain, from her reaction today, Debra had gotten a general picture.

“Erica…” Debra started.

“Sorry, I lost control today,” Erica said with a pale face. “Don’t worry about me. I’m okay. Juan is just despicable.”
