Chapter 169
Erice tugged at Debraโs hand, her eyes filled with worry. Debra reassured her, โIโll be back tomorrow night.โ Erice responded, โI want you at home.โ
As Debra started to leave, Jordan picked up a piece of cake and said, โWe received your gift and blessings. The first piece of birthday cake should go to you.โ Sebe took the cake and headed toward the door. Jordan opened the gift box, revealing a watch inside. Joy crossed his face as he carefully put it on his wrist.
Debra followed them out. As they walked, Joe tried to reassure her. โMadam, please donโt quarrel with Mr. Nichols. He has been worried about you.โ
Debra responded, her voice laced with sarcasm, โWorried about me? He should worry more about Shelia, who is in prison.โ She knew Andrew had contacted the warden to ensure Shelia suffered during her incarceration. Shelia had brought this upon herself, and Debra felt no sympathy for her.
When they arrived at their destination, Joe left. Debra entered and found the room pitch black. She frowned, reaching for the light switch, but before she could turn it on, someone pressed her against the wall. She recognized the person, hearing a grunt.
โItโs me,โ Juan grumbled. In the darkness, she couldnโt make out his expression, but she sensed bitterness in his tone. She quickly switched on the light, causing Juan to squint against the sudden brightness. She stepped back, maintaining a safe distance.
โYou called me back, so whatโs the deal?โ Juan had Joe summon her back every other day, something heโd never done before.
โHave you been staying at the Pottersโ the past few days?โ Juan asked.
Debra nodded, her expression unyielding. โYes, I have. What about it? Didnโt your people tell you?โ
Juan hesitated, realizing he couldnโt argue against what she said. โI donโt like being watched. You have no right to watch me. Our marriage was purely a business alliance, with no feelings involved,โ she added.
Juanโs anger surfaced, his voice rising. โNo feelings? Didnโt you like me back then, insisting on marrying me with your familyโs influence?โ
Debra felt a pang of irritation. โAs you said, that was before. I donโt like you anymore.โ
Juan took a step forward. โYou think you can like or dislike me as you please? What do you take me for?โ
Debraโs patience wore thin. โEnough! Arguing with me like this isnโt like you at all. What do you want by calling me back? Donโt tell me itโs because youโre jealous that I celebrated Jordanโs birthday. I wonโt believe such a ridiculous thing coming from your mouth.โ
Juan opened his mouth to speak but found himself at a loss for words. That was exactly what he had been thinking, but seeing Debraโs indifferent expression, he felt a growing bitterness within him.
โI wronged you because of Shelia,โ he managed.
Debra thought her ears must be playing tricks on her. โAre you apologizing to me?โ
Juanโs expression froze. She continued, โDid you call me back to apologize?โ
