Debre caught a glimpse of Hester hovering outside the door. She had dressed in a simple white dress that accentuated her youthfulness. Younger than Shelia, her pure appearance was quite endearing. She seemed to possess an allure that could captivate any man, even more than Shelia had. As Hester entered the room, Shelia noticed her immediately. In terms of looks, Hester surpassed Shelia; in demeanor, Hester exuded the aura of a refined lady; and in age, Hester was notably younger. At first sight, Shelia felt that Hester was trying to imitate her, but it was clear that Hester had gone beyond mere imitation.
โJuan, Mrs. Nichols,โ Hester greeted. Her entrance caused everyone to pause and wonder about her identity. Debra smiled and introduced her. โThis is Hester from the Vargas family, now caring for Mrs. Nichols Sr.โ Hester stood aside, smiling shyly. โJuan, your grandmother was worried you might drink too much, so she sent me to check on you and also to see the world. I will drive you and Mrs. Nichols home later.โ
Her sweet voice caused Sheliaโs focus to shift from Debra. She had never heard of Hester or the Vargas family, yet Hesterโs appearance triggered a sense of crisis within her.
โShelia, whatโs wrong?โ Leanna asked, noticing Sheliaโs darkening expression.
Shelia shook her head, her voice tight. โNothing.โ
Debra sat quietly by Juanโs side, observing the scene unfold. She didnโt have the energy to deal with Shelia or Hester. Since they both adored Juan, it was better to let them confront each other.
โAccording to your grandmother, you should drink less,โ Hester said, switching Juanโs wine glass for a soft drink. Debra watched silently, as did the others. It should have been Debra handling this, yet Hester openly took matters into her own hands.
Juanโs tone was cold as he addressed Hester. โSince my grandma asked you to drive, you should wait outside.โ
Hester looked crestfallen. โItโs a bit cold outside, soโฆโ
โWell, you can just go home,โ Juan said flatly. No one would dress up like this to drive. The rims of her eyes turned red. Hester looked up at Debra, seeking her help.
Debra indifferently suggested, โItโs getting late. Letโs call it a night and head home.โ She rose first, and the others followed suit, eager to leave the uncomfortable atmosphere.
โWell then, letโs call it a night,โ they echoed. Juan glanced at Debra, seeing no sign of displeasure on her face. He got up, ignoring the stares around him, and led her out. Debra frowned but said nothing due to the public setting.
