Chapter 243
Juan opened the car door, helping Debra inside before sliding into the driverโs seat. Hester hurried after them, but by the time she exited the restaurant, Juan had already sped off with Debra. She was left behind and unhappy.
โSome people think copying my style will impress Juan,โ Shelia said smugly, emerging from behind Hester. Hester straightened, confusion evident in her voice. โDo I know you?โ
Shelia scoffed. โDonโt play dumb. Debra once tried to catch Juanโs eye by imitating me. Now, youโre just a worse copycat.โ
Just moments before, she had devised an excellent plan. The position of Mrs. Nichols was hers for the taking. No one could compete with her for it, not Debra or Hester.
โIs that so? But I donโt think Juan takes you seriously either, so thereโs no point bringing up the past,โ Hester countered, flicking her hair. โAfter all, youโre just a poor student sponsored by him, while I am a fair lady. I would never consider you a competitor; that would be beneath me.โ
With that, she stepped away from the curb and drove off in her luxury car, leaving Shelia fuming.
โFine,โ she muttered under her breath, her hands clenching. โIf you want to compete with me, Iโll make sure both of you disappear.โ
In the speeding car, Debra gripped the seat. โJuan, are you crazy? Why are you driving so fast?โ The car was well over 120 mph, and she couldnโt understand what had gotten into him.
He pulled over, slamming the brakes so hard that Debra lurched forward, nearly hitting the dashboard. โWhatโs gotten into you?โ she snapped.
Juanโs face was dark, his tone accusatory. โDid you orchestrate it?โ
Debra avoided his gaze, feigning ignorance. โI have no idea what youโre talking about.โ
โHow did Shelia coincidentally show up at the restaurant? And how did Hester know I was bringing you here?โ he croaked. โIโve indulged you, but Iโm not stupid. What are you up to? To push me to them, orโฆ?โ
Debra maintained her composure. โYouโre overthinking. Itโs all just a coincidence. Shelia happened to be there, and Hester appeared because of Melodyโs instructions. It has nothing to do with me.โ
Juan studied her expression and softened his tone. โIf you had asserted your status and confronted Shelia, I would have been happy. That would mean you still want to be my wife. If you wanted Hester and Shelia to fight each other, Iโd be glad too. That would mean you still care about me.โ He paused, his gaze intense. โYou didnโt confront them because you didnโt care.โ
