Chapter 402
A shiver ran down Shellaโs spine like a drip of ice water. Sheโd once pegged Edgar as a gentleman, easy to manipulate. But sheโd been dead wrong. He was as ruthless as they came, and his so-called affection was nothing more than a smokescreen. He merely wanted the Blair familyโs support to bolster his influence in Seamar City.
Edgarโs voice cut through the air, cold as steel. โIf you donโt want to end up like her, youโll toe the line and stay on my good side.โ
โI wonโt make that mistake,โ Shelia said, shaking her head fervently. โAs long as I remain Jade and your fiancรฉe, Iโll do whatever you ask.โ
โExcellent!โ Edgar shrugged off his coat. โTomorrow, youโll accompany me to the hospital. Youโll apologize to Michael.โ
โWhat?โ Shelia blanched. โYou want me to bow to Michael?โ
โNot just Michael. Debra, too,โ Edgar specified.
Her face drained of color. โNo. I canโt do that.โ
Edgarโs gaze sharpened, and Shelia wilted. โJust not Debra? Anything but that?โ
Edgar scoffed. โWould you rather go to jail?โ
Shelia shuddered at the thought.
Edgar continued, โYouโve messed with Michael. Do you think you can avoid jail? If we canโt settle this privately, youโll be arrested. Iโm sure you know what life in jail is like.โ
Shelia shivered, turning ashen. Desperation clawing at her throat, she clutched at Edgarโs pants.
โIโll do it. Iโll do anything to stay out of jail.โ
Edgar crouched, cupping her cheek. His expression softened, reverting to the affectionate faรงade she knew so well. โThatโs what Iโm talking about.โ
Shelia held her tongue, her eyes wide with fear. Only after Edgar left did she dare to move, her body stiff from the cold floor. She glanced down at her slightly rounded belly, a spark of relief igniting within her. She was glad she hadnโt gotten rid of the baby. Now she still had a retreat.
The next day, Debra was escorted to the hospital by Edgarโs men. She entered the room to find Shelia already on her knees, eyes downcast, her voice filled with remorse. โMr. Austin, Iโm so sorry. Please, forgive me.โ
Debra raised an eyebrow. This was a far cry from the Shelia she knew.
โWhatโs all this about, Mr. Odom?โ she asked, sitting on the sofa, her gaze fixed on Sheliaโs penitent form. โAnd Miss Miles, with your status, you shouldnโt be groveling on the floor.โ She added, as a polite gesture, โYou can get up and speak.โ
But Shelia continued her repentance. โI was wrong. Edgar has opened my eyes. I let jealousy cloud my judgment, and Iโm truly sorry. Please, Debra, find it in your heart to forgive me.โ
Debra calmly watched Sheliaโs performance.
