Chapter 412
The moment the words escaped Debraโs lips, she wished she could reel them back in. Sheโd seen the affection in Juanโs eyes, unchanged and unyielding. Heโd gambled everything on her once, and she knew heโd do it again in a heartbeat.
โIf you want, theyโre all yours,โ Juan said without hesitation.
โWhat if Iโm not joking?โ
โIโm not either.โ
โForget it. Iโm tired of this game. Whatโs next?โ
Debra marched toward the amusement park exit, leaving Juan stunned. She tossed over her shoulder, โDonโt tell me this is all youโve got planned.โ
Juan always had a backup plan. And with a grand gesture like renting out an entire amusement park, there had to be more. After all, he had even conquered his acrophobia.
โThereโs more,โ he said, following her. Whenever he tried to get closer, Debra would step forward just in time. The distance between them seemed unbridgeable, as insurmountable as that single step.
Across town, at Marionโs place, Randy catapulted off the couch. โYouโre kidding me.โ
Ericaโs voice crackled through the phone. โIโm dead serious. Juan rented out the whole amusement park. Do you think heโd do that for nothing? Itโs Debraโs birthday.โ
โDamn! Heโs pulling out all the stops,โ Randy mumbled, hollering for Marion. โMarion, come out! Juan is trying to steal Debra away! Marion!โ
He burst into Marionโs room, but no one was there.
โWhatโs going on? Whereโs Marion?โ Erica asked anxiously.
Randy scratched his head. โBeats me. Heโs not here.โ
โWhat? How is that possible? Check the bathroom.โ Erica was confused.
Randy snorted. โNo, heโs not hiding under the sink.โ
He wondered if Marion had figured out Debraโs birthday and left early to prepare. He sighed, shifting gears. โForget it. Plan B. Iโll book a restaurant. You figure out how to pry Debra away from Juan.โ
โGot it.โ Erica hung up.
Juan ushered Debra into a mall. After a lunch of her favorite dishes, they descended to the lobby. What had been an empty space was now a floral fantasia. A giant screen blazed โHappy Birthday, Debra.โ Balloons bobbed among the blooms, and elegantly wrapped gifts teetered in a towering pile. Juan looked a bit unsure but led Debra to the center of the lobby.
โI didnโt know what you liked, so I prepared some gifts that girls usually like and had them wrapped.โ
Debraโs eyes widened. She gestured to a sports car sporting a massive bow. โIs that part of the package?โ
Juan rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly uncertain. โMaybe. Probably.โ
