Chapter 44 +25 BONUS
A man like Juan, who had weathered many storms, definitely knew this disclosure was nothing serious. That was why there had been no news from him after their morning phone call.
Debra said, โOkay. Since it was my mistake, Iโll go along with whatever you decide.โ
โJust attend a press conference with me,โ Juan said.
โThat simple?โ Debra was puzzled. She didnโt believe he would let her off the hook.
Juan set down the newspaper. โBeing a loving couple isnโt as simple as you think.โ
From his expression, Debra inferred his thoughts. That was true. It was indeed nauseating to act intimately with someone she didnโt like. In her previous life, Juan had always resisted attending major events with her. It wasnโt easy for him to pretend to be a loving couple with her.
โIโll cooperate unconditionally,โ Debra said, but then regretted it.
Juan had Sophie prepare an elegant evening gown. Its blemish-free white color reminded her of Sheila. In her last life, Sheila had worn this dress. Juan had it tailored for her return from studying abroad, but now Debra was wearing it.
โI donโt like it,โ she disapproved.
โBear with it,โ Juan said. โTo dissolve the scandal, you must appear dignified, elegant, and pure.โ
Debra had no choice but to reluctantly put on the dress. This press conference was meant to promote a new property project developed by the Nichols Group, and all the major media outlets were present.
Debra got out of the car with Juan, holding his hand and smiling flawlessly under the camera flashes, as they presented themselves as a deeply affectionate couple. Not far away, Sheila was wearing a plain dress, quite inconspicuous among the attendees. Juan often had her attend such events to expand her horizons, and this time was no exception. The only difference was that this time, Debra stood by Juanโs side.
Soon, the press conference began. Once inside the venue, Sheila searched around but failed to find her seat. This was noticed by Joe, who was greeting journalists at the door. He came over and said, โMr. Nichols has arranged for you to sit a bit further back, given your sensitive identity recently.โ
Sheila was stunned. Following Joeโs direction, she saw her seat in the most inconspicuous corner. Her heart felt heavy. In the past, she had always sat beside Juan.
โMiss Miles, donโt overthink it. The rumors about you and Mr. Nichols have been continuous, and todayโs occasion is special. This is for your best interest.โ
Sheila mustered a smile. โI totally understand. Iโm not fit to sit in the front anyway. Itโs better to sit at the back.โ
Joe felt relieved at her understanding and compliance. Sheila sat in the last row, where she had a clear view of Debra and Juan in the front. They seemed to be chatting and laughing, and Juan even thoughtfully had a blanket prepared to cover Debraโs legs.
Sheila couldnโt help but clench her fists.
