Chapter 543
Debraโs remark left Melody trapped. Of course, she had the money, but all her assets were held in the Nichols Groupโs account, making immediate access to such a large sum impossible. Yet, as the matriarch of the Nichols family, she couldnโt admit a lack of readily available cash. Forcing a composed smile, she said, โOf course, I understand that not everyone can appreciate fine things. Since you donโt want it, thereโs nothing more I can do.โ She took the ring back, and Debra grabbed her arm. โThatโs right. Now, how about we go get the cash together?โ
Melody was caught in a dilemma. In the end, she led Debra back to her room and opened the large chest hidden under the bed. Gleaming gold bars and bricks were stacked high, filling the chest with undeniable, heavy wealth. Debra glanced inside, her expression an exaggerated display of surprise. โWow, I didnโt expect you to be this wealthy.โ
Melody smirked, her fingers brushing one of the gold bricks. โYour family may be a century-old scholarly family, but I doubt youโve ever seen this much wealth.โ
Debra chuckled, the mockery in her tone barely hidden. โTrue, this chest holds more than most people could dream of in a lifetime. But does it add up to one billion dollars?โ
Her words froze Melodyโs smile. The glittering gold bars might have been impressive, but their total value fell short. Sighing, Debra shook her head. โNo wonder you didnโt want to use cash. Turns out, itโs just not enough.โ
Melody brushed off the comment. โMaybe I donโt have enough here, but Juan does. Iโll just have him fill in whatโs short.โ
Debraโs smile sharpened. โBut all of Juanโs money is in my hands now.โ
That hit Melody hard, her eyes narrowing. โWhat are you saying?โ
โI guess I can lend you one billion dollars. But considering Juan and I just got remarried, donโt you think itโs time you show some appreciation to your granddaughter-in-law?โ
โSo, thatโs your game, huh? Youโve finally shown your true colors. Well, let me tell you something. Donโt expect to get a penny out of me.โ
โOh, you misunderstand. I donโt want any of your things. But if you canโt come up with the money today, well, by tomorrow, everyone in Seamar City will be laughing at you.โ Melodyโs face flushed with anger and embarrassment.
Debra took her hand and continued. โIโm trying to help you here. I donโt want anything from you. Iโll lend you one billion dollars, but in return, why donโt you leave this chest here as collateral? We can draw up an agreement. Once your repayment comes in, Iโll return the chest to you, untouched. You have my word.โ
Melody was skeptical. โCould you be so generous?โ
โWell, I donโt want Juan to be caught in the middle of all this,โ Debra replied. โIf he and I can live in peace, I will treat you with all the respect you deserve.โ
