Chapter 569

Caleb had been considering making things slightly more difficult for Debra, but seeing her disheveled appearance, he cleared his throat and said, โ€œThereโ€™s nothing more I want to ask.โ€ Before Debra could respond, he added, โ€œCan you pick vegetables?โ€

โ€œI can.โ€

Caleb lit up instantly. โ€œThen come with me.โ€

He led Debra through the back door, down to the first-floor kitchen. It was enormous, built for preparing meals for dozens of people.

โ€œCome on in,โ€ Caleb waved her over excitedly. โ€œI saw how hardworking you were earlier, pulling those weeds, so Iโ€™m going to let you in on a secret. Mr. Houston Sr. loves homemade food. I know youโ€™re his future daughter-in-law. Do you know how to cook?โ€

โ€œI do,โ€ Debra replied.

Caleb beamed even brighter. โ€œThatโ€™s great. You have no idea how long itโ€™s been since Mr. Houston Sr. has had a home-cooked meal. Sure, the chefโ€™s food is tasty, but thereโ€™s nothing like a meal made by family.โ€

As he chatted on, he asked, โ€œSo, what do you like to eat, child?โ€

โ€œSandwiches. Iโ€™m pretty good at making them.โ€

โ€œSandwiches? I love sandwiches too.โ€ Caleb caught himself a moment too late. Realizing his slip-up, he quickly added, โ€œI mean, Mr. Houston Sr. loves sandwiches. If you made him some, heโ€™d be over the moon.โ€

โ€œWell then, let me show you what Iโ€™ve got.โ€

Debra rolled up her sleeves, tying her hair up high with a ribbon. From mixing the dough to rolling it out and making the filling, she worked efficiently while Caleb helped in small ways. An hour later, her hands covered in flour, she wiped her face and put the sandwiches into the oven.

โ€œTheyโ€™ll be ready in a few minutes.โ€

โ€œWho taught you how to make sandwiches?โ€

โ€œWhen I was little, I learned from my parents.โ€

โ€œAnd your parentsโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThey passed away.โ€

Their conversation turned casual, the air heavy with nostalgia. Caleb, after a moment of silence, finally spoke. โ€œMy son and daughter-in-law are gone too.โ€

Debra paused, hands still on the plate she was preparing. Caleb continued, โ€œBut I still have a grandson. Heโ€™s just like me, almost too much like me.โ€ A flicker of sadness clouded his eyes.

Debra interrupted softly, โ€œSir, the sandwiches are done.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œWant to try one?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

Caleb eagerly nodded. Debra scooped out the sandwiches and put them on a plate.

โ€œHow is it?โ€

โ€œDelicious. These are the best sandwiches Iโ€™ve had in decades.โ€

โ€œSo, did I pass your test?โ€

โ€œYou passed.โ€

Calebโ€™s words caught in his throat. He looked up, only to be met by Debraโ€™s sly smile. Before he could react, the kitchen door burst open.

Marjon stood in the doorway, his face dark and stormy. Calebโ€™s heart skipped a beat. Debra was stunned. โ€œMarjon? What are you doing here?!โ€
