Chapter 626
Juan leaned in. โWho did you go to see โAbsurd Worldโ with?โ
Debraโs heart pounded. โYouโre still clinging to that? I went with Erica. Is that a problem?โ
But Juan was relentless. โI had Joe check the ticket records for every theater in Seamar City. Thereโs no trace of you or Erica. You didnโt go to any cinema. Why did you lie?โ
Debraโs jaw dropped. โYouโre insane,โ she managed to say. โJoe is your top secretary, and you made him dig through ticket records? Youโve officially lost it.โ
โโAbsurd Worldโ wasnโt a box office hit. It wasnโt hard to check,โ Juan said, his tone serious. โStop dodging the question. Why did you lie?โ
Debra knew that he liked the film, something even Joe didnโt know. In the past, Debraโs eyes had always been filled with fear and disgust when she looked at him; she could never understand what she had done wrong. And today, Debra mentioned the Farley family. A businessmanโs intuition told him that something was amiss.
As Debra remained silent, he added, โYou also bought a piece of land that turned into the McKinney Groupโs first major commercial street. Everyone thought it was a fluke, but now Iโm wondering. Did you know something the rest of us didnโt?โ
Debra tensed as Juan moved closer to her. โWhat else are you hiding from me?โ
Faced with Juanโs relentless questioning, Debra steadied her chaotic thoughts. She couldnโt let Juan know about her rebirth. Talk of rebirth would make anyone think she was crazy.
Just as she was about to come up with an excuse, a sound from outside the cave caught her attention. Debraโs breath hitched. Juan grabbed her hand and pulled her further back into the cave.
Peering through the thick bushes at the entrance, they saw two burly men dressed in black raincoats. Their guns were gleaming under the faint light.
โMercenaries,โ Debra whispered, gripping Juanโs arm.
The two men werenโt leaving, maybe having found their hiding spot. But now, they couldnโt go out or retreat.
Juan leaned in closer and whispered, โFeel the wind?โ
Debra closed her eyes and, sure enough, she could feel a faint breeze against her skin. It was hard to believe since they were in a cave.
Juan motioned for her to follow. They crept deeper into the cave, their movements slow and deliberate. Soon, Juan found the sourceโa narrow tunnel where the wind was coming through. It was their only way out.
But just as they were about to slip through, the bushes at the caveโs entrance rustled. โFound one!โ a mercenary growled, his voice sending chills down Debraโs spine.
โRun!โ Juan shouted, pulling Debra into the tunnel. Gunshots rang out behind them, and Debraโs heart pounded. The tunnel was long, and they didnโt know when they would reach the end. The killers were laughing wildly.
