Chapter 674
Marion quickly explained, โThat was becauseโฆโ
Debra cut him off. โAnd you pointed a gun at me. Were you trying to kill me?โ
โNo. Kaleโs reflexes are top-notch. He would never let you die.โ
โSo, you were just gambling with my life, trusting a stranger to protect me? What if he hadnโt reacted fast enough?โ
โI raised the gun one centimeter higher. Even if he failed to react, the bullet wouldnโt hit you.โ
Overcome with sadness, Debra threw herself into his arms, finally letting out all the frustration, fear, and anger sheโd been holding in for days. โDo you even know what Drake is like? He is a monster,โ she sobbed, burying her face in Marionโs chest. Randy made a quick gesture to the others in the room, signaling them to stay quiet and move carefully. One by one, they slipped out of the room. On his way out, Randy closed the door behind him, giving the two some privacy.
โI know,โ Marion whispered, stroking her back. โYouโre safe now. Iโm here with you.โ
Debra gradually calmed down. She looked up at him and asked, โDo you know each other?โ
Marion nodded solemnly. โYeah, we were like brothers.โ
Debra fell silent for a moment, processing his words. โDrake thought the person I contacted this afternoon was Juan. He drugged me, hoping to use me as leverage against him or negotiate some kind of โdeal.โ But he didnโt know about our connection, so things didnโt go as he planned.โ
โI had to make it clear to him that you didnโt mean anything to me. Otherwise, he wouldnโt have left you behind and escaped alone,โ Marion explained.
Debra frowned. โAre you sure he didnโt have a backup plan?โ
Drake had sounded so confident earlier, as if his men were already deployed around the area.
โDrake is all about mind games,โ Marion said, shaking his head. โBut that wonโt work on me.โ
Debra realized there were no hidden reinforcements.
โNow it makes sense why Drake, knowing that Edgar had purposefully stranded us in Flesta, only had Kale working in secret without taking any open action. It turns out that he simply doesnโt have the manpower to confront Edgarโs forces here.โ
โExactly. He knows better than to challenge the local powers outright.โ
Debra nodded slowly, finally understanding why Drake had taken the risk of coming to Flesta in the first place. In Seamar City, Juan had full control, but Flesta was Edgarโs turf. Given their alliance, it was safer to travel from Flesta to Orkgate.
โDidnโt he know it was easier to get here than to leave?โ
Chapter 674
โHe knew. I presume he has gotten what he wanted from Seamar City. Thatโs why he was so eager to go back to Orkgate.โ
โHe got it? Thatโs impossible. Iโve locked away the ledger. He couldnโt have been after something else, could he?โ
Marion shook his head. It wasnโt clear yet. His gaze drifted to Debraโs leg, and his eyes narrowed. She had pinched herself so hard that her thigh was now bruised purple.
