Chapter 881
With her words, the air in the room seemed to freeze. Cathryn stared intently at Marion, knowing full well the influence the Bernard family held overseas and how crucial it was to Marionโs position. She couldnโt believe that he would give up everything just for Debraโs sake.
Debra smirked at her naivety. Cathryn had clearly been sheltered too much by Shawn, unaware of the harsh realities of the world outside. In this situation, she had no leverage against Marion at all.
Debra asked calmly, โWhereโs the evidence?โ
Cathryn was confused. โWhat evidence?โ
โNaturally, the evidence of Mr. Bernardโs request for Marion,โ Debra replied. โYouโre saying that your father required Marion to marry you. Got any witnesses or documents to prove it? Otherwise, people might think youโre just using this as an excuse to force Marion to marry you.โ
Cathryn paused. โMy father made this request on his deathbed. I was there, and so was Marion.โ
โJust the two of you?โ Debra said, looking troubled. โThatโs a problem. You two have conflicting statements, and since both of you are involved, we canโt trust either of you. Do you have any other evidence to support your claim? Like a notary or a contract signed by Mr. Bernard?โ
Cathrynโs face turned paler and paler. All of this was just something Shawn had said verbally. It wasnโt included in his will.
โIt seems there arenโt any. In that case, youโre just talking without any legal basis.โ
โIโฆโ
โI understand. Everything youโve done is to make Marion marry you. But to go to such lengths? Iโm genuinely concerned about the future of the company. If someone like you takes charge, I worry there wonโt be any good days left for anyone.โ
Her words were sharp and hit home. These shareholders were dissatisfied with Marion simply because they wanted to seize power and make Cathryn a puppet. But at the end of the day, it was about making money. If someone as naive as Cathryn took over the company, it would be devoured by the Eaton family and Drake. Even the people within the Bernard family wouldnโt care about past favors. Otherwise, when Shawn died, they wouldnโt have remained silent and let Marion take control. They jumped out now with the sole aim of getting a piece of the pie.
Debra added, โI think everyone should consider this carefully. Following Marion, you make hundreds of millions a year. A change in leadership might bring you nothing.โ
Some shareholders who werenโt from the Bernard family wavered. They hadnโt really intended to overthrow Marion; they were just trying to curry favor with the elders. If Marion stepped down, the elders would be satisfied. If Marion didnโt step down, they would continue to attend the shareholdersโ meeting. Either way, they had nothing to lose. From Cathrynโs demeanor, they could tell that she was too immature to match Marion.
