The maid hesitated. “Mr. Fermin Eaton is often busy with company matters, so he’s rarely home.”

“Is he home today?”

“What? Don’t tell me no one is at home.”

The maid stammered, “Mr. Fermin Eaton is home, but he’s busy with work. He might not be able to see you right now.”

Melody insisted, “Is this how you treat your guests? Go tell Mr. Fermin Eaton that if he doesn’t come to see me, I’ll pack my things and leave immediately.”

Her tone left no room for negotiation. The maid could only nod and leave to deliver the message.

In the bedroom, Garland was upside-down, reciting lines from economic textbooks.

The maid opened the door and froze at the sight. “Mr. Fermin Eaton, you’re doing this again.”

Garland’s pained voice broke through. “Verna, perfect timing. A little help here.”

But not far off, Juan cut him off. “Ten more minutes. Hold it.”

“I can’t. I’m about to collapse.”

“If you collapse, get back up and keep going.”

“This is brutal.”

Verna interjected, “Mr. Nichols, maybe we should let Mr. Fermin Eaton down. Your grandmother wants to see him.”

“Me?” Garland’s arms gave way, and he flopped to the floor. “Why would she want to see me?”

Verna glanced at Juan and explained, “She seemed to be upset about not seeing Mr. Eaton Sr. these past few days.”

Juan grasped the situation. Earlier, he had asked Bert to send Melody back to Seamar City, but her stubbornness was legendary. Not even Bert’s frosty attitude could budge her.

Garland groaned, “Do I have to go? I don’t want to meet her at all.”

“Go meet her,” Juan said.

“What am I supposed to say? Should I tell her to stop clinging to my dad because he’s not interested in her? Would she rip me apart?” Garland grumbled, shuddering at the memory of Juan’s scarred back.

“Well,” Verna chimed in, “Mrs. Nichols Sr. says that if you refuse to meet her, she’ll pack up and go home.”

Garland perked up. “Really? Then let her leave, and everyone wins. She’s happy. I’m happy, and Juan is happy.”

Juan shot him a glance that conveyed exactly how little he thought of Garland’s intelligence. After all, Melody was a guest. If she left because of this, Bert would definitely send Garland to drag her back from the airport. That was to save the Eaton family’s reputation.

Juan said, “Go meet her and say whatever you like.”

Garland asked tentatively, “Can I annoy her and make her leave?”
