Chapter 108
Jason's careful handling of the woman in his arms revealed her importance to him. Those aware of his true identityโa prominent figure in Emerald Cityโsecretly suppressed their astonishment. His presence at this location, at this hour, causing such a commotion, was baffling. Regardless of the woman's identity, they feared the repercussions of her involvement could disrupt half the city.
"Find out who's involved," Jason commanded. "Leave no one out."
"Yes, sir," replied a subordinate.
Meanwhile, Jeremy and his wife watched their son's pained cries and the police in the yard, tears frozen in their eyes. They glared angrily at Grace's uncles. "Who the hell is she?"
Her uncles, pale and dismayed, exchanged glances. Was this the same helpless niece recently released from prison? They wouldn't have dared to exploit her otherwise. But nowโฆ clearly, she had powerful backing.
The memory of their dinner conversation and their drugging of Grace sent a chill down their spines. Why hadn't she mentioned her connections? Had she, they wouldn't have dared act so recklessly.
Grace felt increasingly uncomfortable, driven by an instinct she couldn't understand. She could only rely on those around her. Jason's presence calmed her, yet she instinctively craved more.
Jason watched the woman in his arms thrashing about, his face darkening. If he'd been even a moment later, or if she hadn't called him
Terrence reported, "Mr. Reed, we've found something. The drug used on Miss Cummins was a pill sold illegally at a local bar. I've dispatched personnel to determine its ingredients."
"Who gave her the drug?" Jason asked coldly.
"Her relatives. We haven't pinned it down yet; they're all shifting blame," Terrence replied.
Jason's eyes grew colder. Betrayal by family must have been devastating. Grace's movements grew more violent and frantic. He heard her whisper, "Jayโฆ Jayโฆ"
"I'm here," Jason said, his cold demeanor instantly softening. "I'm here, sis. Hang on, it'll be over soon."
She seemed oblivious to his words, continuing to thrash, her fingers scratching at him. He reached to wipe her sweat-soaked hair, only to have her bite his finger.
"Mr. Reed!" Terrence exclaimed.
