Chapter 109

"It's nothing," Jason said faintly, as if feeling no pain. "How long until we reach the hospital?"

"Fifteen minutes or so," Terrence replied.

In her condition, Miss Cummins couldn't go to a small hospital. She needed one of the city's major hospitals.

When they arrived, Terrence finally identified the drug's ingredients. The doctors, contacted en route, were all highly respected—their presence would have been shocking. Such a quick assembly of these doctors required a significant event.

Yet, here they were, examining the prescription and urgently consulting on a woman in torn, cheap clothing.

"It's not serious," one of the renowned doctors said. "A sedative, let her sweat it out; that should suffice. Unless it's a long-term, high-dose ingestion, there won't be lasting effects. She can also take medication over the next three days to accelerate her metabolism."

"Give her the sedative," Jason said.

A sedative was administered; Grace immediately calmed, as if asleep. Jason finally exhaled in relief.

"However," the doctor cautioned, "we lack clinical data on this drug. We may not have given enough sedative. If her symptoms return, she'll need another dose."

After the doctor left, Jason instructed Terrence, "Guard the entrance."

"And you, Mr. Reed?"

"I'll stay with her," Jason replied.

Terrence glanced at the unconscious Grace, then at Jason. "Why don't I stay? If you leave, I'm afraid Old Master will"

"I'm afraid Grandpa will investigate on his own," Jason interrupted. "No need to hide this; he'll find out about Grace eventually. You go; I'll stay with her."

Terrence left without further comment. Grace and Jason were alone in the large VIP ward.

He approached the bed, lowered his head, and gazed at her. "Grace…" he murmured softly. He gently caressed her burning cheeks. "I'll help you avenge this. Anyone who hurts you will pay tenfold, a hundredfold. Is that alright?"

She didn't answer. Jason sat quietly, watching her, finding solace only in her presence. He couldn't rest easy with anyone else caring for her.

After a while, she stirred, making a soft sound. Jason frowned, leaning closer to wipe the sweat from her brow. As he neared, her eyes snapped open, and she wrapped her arms around his neck.

Her cheeks were flushed, her lips red, her dark almond eyes veiled in a hazy, beautiful mist.
