Chapter 117
Grace opened her bag; all her belongings were still inside. However, her mobile phone, discovered at the Miller residence, had been confiscated. It was turned off, so she restarted it. The notifications were a flurry of missed calls and text messages: several from her grandmother, a few from Lina, and a couple of unknown numbers.
โI can guess why Grandma called, but Linaโฆโ She saw nearly twenty missed calls from Lina. Grace quickly returned the call.
Lina answered breathlessly. โGrace, is that you?โ
โYes, my phone was turned off yesterday. I just turned it on and saw your missed calls,โ Grace explained.
Lina sighed. โGoodness! I called last night, but it didnโt connect. You were going to your grandmotherโs, and I was worried something happened. Besides your grandmother, her relatives are the type to kick you when youโre down.โ
Lina continued, explaining sheโd called from the previous night into the next morning without success. Her anxiety grew, and sheโd planned to go to her grandmotherโs house that afternoon if she couldnโt reach Grace by noon, as she knew the address.
โBy the way, they didnโt do anything bad last night, did they?โ Lina asked anxiously.
โThey tried to sell me off to be some foolโs wife to buy a house,โ Grace said, readily relating the previous nightโs events at her grandmotherโs.
Lina listened, her teeth gritted. โWhy are there such shameless people? You werenโt harmed, were you?โ
โIโm fine. Jay saved me,โ Grace replied.
โAre you back at the apartment? Iโll come find you,โ Lina said.
โNo, Iโm with Jay. Iโll see you when I get back,โ Grace replied hastily.
Lina urged Grace to be careful, adding indignantly, โYour family should be punished. Let them off easily this time, and theyโll try to sell you again.โ
โYeah, I know,โ Grace said.
After hanging up, she hesitated, staring at her grandmotherโs missed call. โWhat should I tell Grandma? Pretend nothing happened, or tell herโฆ my uncles and aunt are getting what they deserve?โ
She took a deep breath and called her grandmother. Soon, she heard her grandmotherโs trembling voice. โGrace, is that you?โ
โYes.โ Grace felt her nose tingle.
โGrace, didโฆ did something happen yesterday? Iโฆ I heard you were saved by someone important. Did Millerโฆ did theyโฆโ
โNo, Grandma, Iโm fine. Nothing happened last night,โ Grace explained.
โThatโs good, thatโs good.โ Her grandmotherโs relief was evident. โIf anything had happened to you, how would I face your mother in heaven!โ
Graceโs nose tingled again.
