Chapter 122
After squeezing toothpaste onto his toothbrush, Jason filled a cup with warm water and handed it to Grace.
Grace blushed, unsure how she'd managed to brush her teeth moments later. She was overwhelmed by his scent.
Jason wet a towel under the warm water.
"I can do it myself…" Grace mumbled, biting her lip.
"Isn't it easier if I do it?" he asked.
His words were true, but they were standing too close. His arms were around her, and as he wrung out the towel…
Grace looked into the mirror. She'd always known Jason was good-looking, but with his forehead no longer hidden by bangs, and dressed in a suit, he looked elegant and unattainable. She hadn't noticed before. Even Lina, who'd correctly guessed he wasn't homeless, had insisted he was in a similar situation and kept him close.
"Was it because… I was lonely?" she wondered.
The truth was, Jason wasn't homeless; he was a person of considerable status. Grace recognized the expensive quality of his clothing, and the doctors and nurses had treated him with deference.
"Sis, what are you thinking about?" His question interrupted her thoughts.
She looked up, meeting his gaze in the mirror. She froze, trapped by his intensity.
"Sis, your face is red," Jason murmured, leaning down until his lips were near her cheek. His warm breath tickled her cheek and neck.
She blushed even deeper.
"Why do you… still call me sis?" She lowered her eyelids, trying to avoid the mirror.
"Don't you like it?" he asked.
"You're not homeless… you don't have to call me sis," she mumbled.
Silence descended, a heavy, suffocating stillness broken only by the running water.
"Are you angry with me for deceiving you?" Jason finally asked.
Grace was conflicted. She despised deception, especially one that had lasted so long. Yet, she cherished their time together; it had felt like a dream. And if he hadn't saved her, her life would have been a living hell.
Taking a deep breath, she looked at him in the mirror. "Jay, I don't blame you." She knew this marked the end of their brother-sister relationship. They came from different worlds.
Jason frowned. He should have felt happy at her forgiveness, but her gaze unsettled him. She seemed distant, and he disliked that feeling.
