Chapter 154
Grace was used to this type of personโthose who looked down on sanitation workers and, if they bumped into one, would immediately shift the blame.
โForget it, Claire, itโs no big deal,โ Grace said as she and Claire continued sweeping the streets. After work, Grace changed out of her uniform and found a silver bracelet in one of her pockets.
โWhen did this get in my pocket?โ she wondered. Working the night shift, few people were around. She put the bracelet away, deciding to turn it in to Lost and Found the next day.
Back at her rental apartment, it was dark and quiet. In the past, after her night shift, Jason would be waiting, and the apartment would be bright. But when Grace switched on the light, the room was empty. She smiled wryly.
Lying in bed, she examined the bracelet. It looked ordinary, like one she'd had as a child. She wondered how it had ended up in her pocket. Then she remembered the man who had bumped into her earlier. Could it be his?
At a glance, the bracelet seemed worthless. Would he even bother looking for it? Grace sighed, deciding not to worry about it. She would report it to the Sanitation Service Center the next day.
Unbeknownst to Grace, the man who had bumped into her was being held captive in a hotel room. He was beaten and interrogated.
He regretted his actions. He wouldn't have stolen the bracelet from Brian if he'd known the consequences. Brian's attire had suggested wealth; he'd thought he'd caught a "big fish."
โSir, I have no idea about the bracelet! Iโฆ I saw it and put it in my pocket. I swear I donโt know where it is now!โ the man cried, kneeling before Brian, his face bloodied.
Brian sat gracefully on the sofa, his handsome face cold. โWhere is it? You can ask for anything, but you must return the bracelet. Otherwise, I'll break your hand.โ
Terror gripped the man. If he'd known the bracelet's importance, he wouldn't have pocketed it. He'd left in a hurry and bumped into someoneโฆ
Suddenly, he remembered something. โI remember! Someone must have picked it upโฆ Iโฆ I bumped into a sanitation worker sweeping the street. The bracelet must have fallen out, and she picked it up.โ
The men holding him looked at Brian.
โMr. Hart, what should we doโฆ?โ
โCheck. Find that sanitation worker!โ Brian said coldly. The bracelet was his only comfort for years, and he had to get it backโat any cost. He felt he would never find peace without it.
Suddenly, Grace awoke. The room was bright; she'd left the lights on.
