Chapter 155
She reached for her cellphone to check the time. It was 3:00 a.m., and she could sleep for a few more hours. Just as she was about to close her eyes, she sat bolt upright. The next instant, her eyes flew open in disbelief.
A man sat at the dining table in her apartment, playing with the silver bracelet that had been in her pocket. In the light, he looked like a painting on rice paper. He had thick brows, a high nasal bridge, thin lips, and striking phoenix eyes. When he curled his lips and looked at her, he seemed cold and aloof.
As he gazed at her, Grace felt as if he were a mirage.
โIs this man real? Am Iโฆ dreaming?โ
โAre you awake?โ The manโs voice broke the silence.
Graceโs senses snapped back. She was not dreaming. Everything was real.
โYouโwho are you? Why are you in my apartment in the middle of the night?โ Grace tried to remain calm, quietly reaching for her cellphone to call the police when he wasn't looking.
Before she could grasp it, the man said, โIf youโre thinking of calling the police, forget it. If I wanted to harm you, I would have while you were sleeping.โ
Grace froze. He seemed to have read her mind.
โWhy are youโฆโ
โThis is my bracelet,โ Brian said, standing up. He walked slowly to the bed. โIt was stolen today.โ
โI didnโt steal it. It was already in my pocket when I saw it,โ Grace explained immediately.
โI know you didnโt,โ Brian said. โIf it were you, you wouldnโt be in one piece.โ
Grace bit her lip and clutched the quilt. This man seemed cold and dangerous. She wondered when he had entered her apartment undetected. Seeing him playing with the bracelet, she realized he must have been there for some time, yet she hadnโt noticed.
After considering this, she concluded he must be extraordinary. No ordinary man could have found her and entered her apartment unnoticed. As he approached, she noticed his high-quality attireโa branded, expensive suit and wristwatch. However, it puzzled her that such a man would break into her apartment for a cheap bracelet.
