Chapter 18

"Sometimes, it's better to be less curious," he said, looking away and driving.

"Okay, understood," Evelyn replied, affecting an obedient demeanor. She'd observed that Brian preferred obedient women; the more obedient, the longer they stayed. Those who tried to be exceptions were quickly discarded.

Although she aimed to be his "exception," she wouldn't rush. She'd take her time.

"Brian, thank you for the necklace. I love it very much. However, I don't think I'll have many opportunities to wear such a luxurious piece," Evelyn began cheerfully, then sounded regretful.

She didn't realize her performance was a joke to Brian. He'd seen too many women putting on a show.

"You can wear it to the Starlight Banquet," he said.

Joy lit up Evelyn's face, but she said, "But I'm just an unknown actress. I don't think I'll be invited."

"Why would you need an invitation? Come with me. I'll introduce you to some directors and producers," Brian replied.

"Brian, you're the best!" Evelyn exclaimed.

Brian continued driving, his gaze icy. He knew what Evelyn wanted and indulged her; she was his current girlfriend, after all. He didn't mind providing perks as long as he received something in return.

His car arrived at the Cummins residence. Evelyn was reluctant to leave. "Brian, thanks for driving me home. Would you like to come up?"

"Nope," he said, leaning closer.

Evelyn's heart pounded. Is he going to kiss me?

Instead, he touched her lips, rubbing her lipstick. He frowned, wiped his finger on a tissue, and said, "Don't use this color anymore. It's too bright."

"Huh? Oh, okay. Understood," Evelyn replied immediately.

"You may get down now," he said flatly.

The car sped off as soon as Evelyn exited.

Evelyn bit her lip, bewildered. She didn't understand why Brian complied with her every wish—luxury gifts, career investments—yet his gaze remained cold. He clearly didn't like her.

"It's just the beginning. I'll win Brian's heart!" she reassured herself. "And what's going on with Grace? Is she with Jason?"

The question lingered.

Inside the small house, Jason carried Grace to the bed and gently laid her down.
