Chapter 213
After all, she wasn't stealing or robbing; she was merely using her labor to earn money.
“If you wanted to be an extra, why didn't you ask me? I might even get you a few lines. You'd make more money than as an extra,” Evelyn said, deliberately raising her hand to stroke her hair and display the fancy watch on her wrist.
Grace found Evelyn's action amusing. “I don't think I'd trick my older sister into being an escort just to get a few more lines.”
Evelyn's expression changed, realizing Grace was mocking her for tricking her into escorting the assistant director. However, she quickly recovered. Looking at Grace, she said, “Are you so short of money that you need to be an extra? Didn't anyone give you any money? Why are you doing this kind of hard work now?”
“I’m not obliged to tell you,” Grace replied, ignoring Evelyn. She walked past her toward the extras' waiting area.
Evelyn frowned, hesitated, then ordered her assistant, “Check out that girl, Grace. Find out everything about her—what's going on, how much the person who introduced her knows. The more detail, the better.”
Evelyn speculated about a possible relationship between Jason and Grace, but remained uncertain. If the woman she saw Jason carrying to his car was Grace, then Grace wouldn't need to be an extra. Grace wasn't interested in show business; if she needed money, she could ask Jason. Besides, how much could an extra really earn?
While Evelyn had her makeup done, her assistant returned with information.
“What? She’s still working at the Sanitation Service Center? And a street cleaner from the Sanitation Service Center introduced her here?” Evelyn exclaimed in disbelief.
“Yes, and Sidney said the person who introduced her said she needed extra money,” the assistant replied.
Evelyn seemed relieved. It appeared Grace wasn't with Jason. Or, even if they had been together, they were clearly broken up and not on good terms. Otherwise, Grace wouldn't need to work as an extra.
Earlier, she'd worried about a relationship between Grace and Jason. Without that worry, she felt a significant weight lifted.
She recalled losing her leading lady role and being relegated to a C-list actress because Grace had been jailed. She'd asked Grace to accompany the assistant director to secure a role, but the assistant director slapped her. Her career suffered even more afterward. She'd hoped Grace would help her get a better role from her ex-boyfriend, Sean Stevens, but Grace had flatly refused. Grace could have simply humbled herself and asked Sean Stevens to help her younger sister, but she wouldn't.
If she hadn't met Brian later, Evelyn's life might never have improved.
