Chapter 22
Was the man behind Evelyn, Brian?
"All right, I'll send you the list of medicines I bought and a copy of my lost-wage certificate. Please pay by then," she said. Turning to Brian, she added, "Thank you for today, Mr. Hart. I need to go now."
Grace left the lounge, leaving Brian and Evelyn alone.
Brian stared coldly at Evelyn, frightening her. Evelyn managed a weak smile. "Brian, why are you looking at me like that? By the way you and my sister do you know each other?"
"Why do you want to pry into this?" Brian replied curtly.
"I'm just curious. I've never heard my sister mention it," she said.
"Right. Your sister lives in a cramped, shabby rental. She cleans streets for a living. And she had to grovel to you, her sister, for a mere $330. Why would she mention it?" Brian's voice was chillingly cold.
It was the first time Evelyn had heard him speak to her with such coldness. She shivered. "Brian my sister and I have a misunderstanding"
"Oh? What kind of misunderstanding requires her to grovel repeatedly?" Brian asked.
Panic seized Evelyn. "I I just wanted the film to look better. My sister did it well, so I I thought I'd let her demonstrate. I didn't intend to"
Evelyn stammered, her attempts at innocence only increasing her nervousness under Brian's gaze.
"Enough," Brian interrupted coldly. "How many people do you think will believe your excuses? Do you take me for a fool?"
Her face paled; she felt exposed.
Brian casually took Evelyn's hand. Her thin wrist displayed a diamond-encrusted, limited-edition watch worth two million dollars.
"Feeling successful, are you? Showing off to your sister? Making her kneel and grovel because you know she can't fight back?"
Brian's tone was casual, but Evelyn listened in horror.
"Come to think of it, I've given you many gifts. Others have secretly given you lavish presents to curry favor. Your sister couldn't earn enough for one of those items in years. Have you never thought of helping her?"
Evelyn's eyes widened, but she could not speak. She trembled uncontrollably.
She had been secretive about the 'respect' she received from others seeking Brian's favor. She had indirectly helped these people by subtly praising them to Brian, thereby completing favors for them.
