Chapter 241
Evelynโs face stiffened, but she couldn't afford a scene. Smiling tightly, she pulled out her purse and asked Grace, โHow much is it?โ
โOne hundred and six dollars,โ Grace replied.
Evelyn produced two hundred dollars, affecting generosity. โKeep the change, sis. Consider it a gift.โ
Grace scoffed, pocketing the money. โIt's not a gift. I'm charging you this much out of kindness. If I sued you for intentional harm, you'd owe me far more.โ
Evelynโs face flushed, but thankfully, her mask concealed it. Sheโd almost forgotten Grace was a lawyer!
โHow could I hurt you intentionally?โ Evelyn said sheepishly. โI was careless that day.โ
โReally, Evelyn?โ Grace looked at her with amusement. โWe both know what youโre like. Thereโs no one else here. Calling me โsisโ and pleading carelessness just makes you look foolish.โ
Evelyn nearly choked, her face darkening. โThen tell me about your relationship with Brian.โ
โI suppose thatโs why youโre here,โ Grace said coldly. โIs it necessary to tell you?โ
โBrianโs my boyfriend now. Donโt try to seduce him. Youโll ruin your reputation and get nothing!โ Evelyn snapped.
A ruined reputation? Grace found her half-sisterโs words hilarious. Her reputation had already been ruined by the accident three years prior. โAnd what am I supposed to get?โ she retorted sarcastically.
Evelyn raised her chin. โIf you know your place, I might give you money to start a small business. Itโs better than cleaning streets, right?โ Having a sanitation worker sister wouldn't look good if she became Mrs. Hart. Evelyn wanted Grace to fail, but maintaining her image required appearing supportive, perhaps even funding a small business for Grace. This could even garner positive publicity.
โDo you think I care about your money?โ Grace burst into laughter. โBesides, how long do you think youโll be Brianโs girlfriend?โ
Brian was far beyond Evelyn's control. He surely knew her scheme, and she'd witnessed his cold treatment of ex-girlfriends. They said he showered his partners with gifts, but seeing his treatment of his exes, she suspected he'd never truly loved anyone. He lavished them with money, designer clothes, jewelry, houses, and cars because such things were insignificant to him.
