Chapter 249
"What?" Evelyn exclaimed, disbelief evident in her voice. Jason's meaning was clear: "You want me to kneel before her?"
"Is there a problem?" Jason asked, lazily raising his eyes.
Evelyn choked back a sob, her face flushing crimson. She couldn't speak.
Grace watched Evelyn's distress. Was Jason defending her? Or was he implying that, even with Brian's backing, he could still force Evelyn to her knees?
A commotion erupted at the shooting site's entrance. The director turned, his expression a mixture of apprehension and relief. He couldn't believe the two VIPs were present. What was happening?
A tall figure approached, clad in a dark gray overcoat that complemented his handsome, yet indifferent, face. It could only be Brian.
Grace was stunned. She hadn't expected Brian's arrival.
Jason raised an eyebrow in surprise at Brian's appearance.
Brian remained calm upon seeing Jason and Grace, as if he already knew they were there.
Seeing Brian, Evelyn immediately found a source of support. She rushed to his side, linking her arm through his, and said in a petulant tone, "Brian, please speak to Mr. Reed for me. He's demanding I kneel and grovel as a demonstration for the extras. I did it once, but he's still unsatisfied. I'm not an extra; I can't keep doing this."
Evelyn's complaint was thinly veiled, a carefully constructed display of grievance.
Brian ignored Evelyn and slowly approached Jason, his dark eyes fixed on him. "What are you doing here?"
"Visiting someone," Jason replied with a half-smile. "Grace is an extra today. I understand your girlfriend previously complained about the extras' performance. She made Grace kneel and grovel as a demonstration. I merely wanted to see her perform the 'standard' movements."
Evelyn, feigning distress, bit her lip, her eyes misting over. "Brian, Mr. Reed asked me to perform, and I did, but he's not satisfied and keeps making me repeat it. Isn't he just picking on me? If he dislikes me, what does it matter if I'm in this film?"
Her approach was a calculated retreat designed to advance her position. By displaying vulnerability, she hoped to disarm her opponents and even evoke a protective instinct in Brian.
To her surprise, Jason simply said, "Fine. Then quit the film."
Evelyn was speechless. She hadn't anticipated Jason's response.
Her gaze darted to Brian, hoping her "prince" would intervene. She hadn't actually intended to quit; this production had the potential to launch her career.
