Chapter 281
Something was going on! Grace looked at her best friend curiously. "Is there?"
"I guess so," Lina Sweeney laughed. "I had a crush on someone back then, but he seemed so young. With him, I felt like an old cow eating young grass. It was quite an encounterโa nice one."
"" An old cow eating young grass? Grace was speechless. Her best friend was only twenty-seven. "Is he very young?" she asked.
"I guess? He's quite young," Lina shrugged. "I met him abroad Oh, never mind, he probably doesn't even remember me now." After all, a handsome boy like that probably had many admirers. Would he remember her, someone he'd only been with for a few days?
Lina Sweeney thought, It's enough to have had that experience.
Grace's face changed slightly when she heard "abroad." She remembered Lina had gone abroad only onceโbefore her accident. Lina had been going to apply for further study at a foreign school and had gone for an interview. It was only her subsequent accident that prevented her from attending the interview; she returned home immediately.
Grace felt responsible for Lina losing that opportunity and, in a sense, for altering Lina's fate. No wonder Lina's parents were still upset. Even Grace felt a lump in her throat whenever she thought about it.
Seeing her best friend's expression, Lina Sweeney knew Grace was likely feeling guilty about the missed opportunity. She quickly said, "Don't beat yourself up. It's not your fault I didn't go abroad. My grades were mediocre; even if I'd gone to the interview, I probably wouldn't have been accepted."
"Lina, thank you," Grace said seriously. "Someday, if you need me, I'll go through fire and water for you!"
"You fool," Lina Sweeney patted her friend's shoulder. "Why did you say that? It's sentimental. You might as well thank me when the situation is reversed!"
"Sure," Grace smiled, but worry lingered. While obsessed with clearing her name, she wondered, Could I really reverse it? If there's a mastermind, could we still find him after three years?
That night, back at the Reed Residence, Jason sat in the living room, staring at something in his hand. Grace found him examining the picture he'd taken of her earlier that day.
Seeing her, Jason put away the photo and smiled. "You're back. How was your meeting with your friend?"
"It went well," she replied.
"Was the clue your friend gave you about the case useful?" he asked casually.
"It could be, but I don't know why the witness lied," Grace said. "I'm afraid he'll avoid me, so I want to gather more information before I act."
She then looked at Jason, a troubled expression on her face. "Do you believe I didn't kill your fiancรฉe in that car accident?"
