Chapter 290
The huge room was as cool as night water. It was so cold one could catch a cold.
As soon as Evelyn arrived home, she learned her mother had been dismissed from her job and her father demoted from supervisor to a regular employee.
"How can this be?" Evelyn exclaimed in surprise. Both her parents worked in the public sector, where demotions, let alone firings, were unheard of unless serious mistakes were made.
Besides, she was still Brian's girlfriend! Even if the sector head wanted to fire and demote her parents, surely they would consider that.
"Didn't you tell your superiors that I'm Brian's girlfriend?" Evelyn asked.
"We did! Of course, we did!" Melinda Riley’s anger flared at the mention. She had told her boss that her daughter was dating the entertainment industry's "prince" and would soon marry into a wealthy family.
However, Melinda Riley's boss had declared, "It doesn't matter who your daughter's boyfriend is. You're fired. No discussion!"
This infuriated her.
To add insult to injury, she had constantly boasted to colleagues about her daughter's relationship with the entertainment industry's "prince." Now, as they watched her pack up her belongings, those same colleagues mocked her downfall.
One colleague she had often pressured even sneered, "Oh, Cuie, isn't your daughter Brian's girlfriend? Even if you lose your job, your daughter can support you! But for how long? I hear Brian changes girlfriends quickly. If dating him guarantees marriage into a wealthy family, imagine how many wives he must have!"
Several colleagues then offered self-righteous, condescending 'advice':
"Yes, Cuie, have your daughter get as much as she can now. She might not get another chance."
"Is marrying into such a wealthy family that easy? Your daughter isn't a socialite. The wealthier the family, the more likely the wife needs to be of equal social standing."
Melinda knew these weren't friendly suggestions; they were mocking her. She had boasted too much, and now her colleagues were gleefully stepping on her.
"When Brian marries Evelyn," Melinda fumed, "I'll shove it in their faces! I'll be Brian's mother-in-law! Let's see what they say then!"
Evelyn felt a pang of guilt. Before, she would have agreed with her mother, but now she wasn't so sure.
Lately, Brian only talked to her about her sister, seemingly disinterested in anything else.
She had been desperately trying to find things to say about her sister.
Even now, she didn't understand what Brian saw in her sister. She was just a street sweeper, wasn't she?
Tony Cummins, however, asked, "What's wrong with our family? We haven't offended anyone. Why are all our jobs suddenly in jeopardy?"
Evelyn shuddered, turning pale. "It can't be because of Sis. Dad burned the photo album that day Could she have complained to Jason, and he retaliated against our family?"
The more they considered it, the more likely it seemed. Otherwise, people would have been wary of harming the family of Brian's girlfriend.
