Chapter 291
Tony Cummins' face contorted in anger. "That ungrateful daughter landed herself in prison and ruined our family. Now she's going to ruin us again?" He had leveraged countless connections and spent a fortune to reach his supervisory position. How could he accept being demoted to a regular employee?
Melinda Riley was equally furious, her expression suggesting she might attack Grace on sight.
Evelyn intervened, "Mom and Dad, don't act rashly. Grace has Jason now. We need a plan." She had suffered greatly at Grace's hands.
Tony and Melinda considered this, finally asking, "What should we do? Just suffer?"
"I'll think it over," Evelyn replied. She needed a strategy to counter Grace's influence on Brian. Otherwise, even if Jason dumped Grace, she might simply replace her as Brian's girlfriend. That couldn't happen.
Lina Sweeney met with Grace, providing information gleaned from a colleague: the witness's full name, current address, occupation, family details, and even how he'd changed his first name (retaining the surname "You").
"Also," Lina continued, "at the time of your case, he was a regular employee with a girlfriend. They broke up because he couldn't afford a house. Shortly after your case concluded, he changed his name, left Emerald City, and bought a commercial-residential building in S Cityโcash. Five million dollars!"
Lina hummed coldly. "Unless he won the lottery, he couldn't afford that."
Grace was puzzled. "You got all this from just asking colleagues?" Some of the information was highly personal.
"I got a general overview from my colleague, then gave a private investigator the basics," Lina explained.
"A private investigator?" Grace was shocked. Lina always took her case seriously. "The expenseโฆ"
Lina glared. "Are you worried about expenses now? Getting to the bottom of your case is paramount."
"But the expenseโฆ"
"You weren't so concerned before."
Grace smiled wryly. True. Before, money hadn't mattered as much. Their carefree days were a distant memory.
