Chapter 294
She trembled and slowly raised her head, stiffly, to look at the person before her. Her wet, black eyes slowly focused.
“Jason, can you help me find Lina?” She seemed to regain her composure. “The police filed a report. They said they’ll send someone, but they don’t know when they’ll find her. If only I remembered the license plate number… Why didn’t I pay more attention?” Remorse tinged her voice.
Jason stared at Grace. He’d only seen her this anxious when something happened to her grandmother. Her grandmother was family, but Lina Sweeney? She was unrelated, yet Grace was deeply worried.
A wave of jealousy surged through him. He was jealous of her concern for Lina Sweeney. What about him? Would she be so worried if something happened to him?
“Let’s go home. It’s cold,” he said. “Look how cold your hands are.”
Was it cold? She felt nothing. Finding Lina consumed her thoughts.
“Will… will you help me find Lina?” she asked, needing a definite answer. She could wait for the police, but… if he helped, they could find Lina sooner. After all, he had extensive connections and resources in Emerald City.
“Let’s go back and talk. Even if I do help, I need the details before contacting anyone, right?” he said. “However, if it’s too late, Lina could be in danger.” She stared at him in the moonlight, her watery black eyes and pale cheeks stinging him like needles.
“I beg you. Find… find Lina, please! If anything happens to her, I…” Her teeth clamped down on her lip.
‘No, nothing will happen to Lina! Nothing will happen to her!’ she repeated silently.
“You’re that anxious? Since you haven’t heard from her and her parents haven’t reported it, perhaps nothing’s happened?” he said.
“Something must have happened! Otherwise, she would have called!” Her best friend hadn’t contacted her.
“Do you care about her that much?” he asked, his voice deep.
“Yes,” she replied without hesitation. Her answer, however, only intensified his discomfort; it felt like a relentless barrage of needles. Even her pallor was unsettling.
“What if I refuse to help? What then?” he asked.
Her eyes widened, her lips trembled, and her thin body shook. Her fingers were almost embedded in the phone she gripped so tightly.
He couldn't bear to see her like that.
