Chapter 315
Looking at the sleeping face before him, he took one of her hands in his. He had found her! She no longer existed only in his memory; she was here, in front of him.
"You agreed today," his voice rang faintly in the quiet room. "I won't allow you to go back on it."
Their breathing was the only answer.
After the interview, Grace returned to the Reed Residence. The interview had been simple. The interviewer reviewed her health certificate and asked basic questions. When asked why a brilliant law graduate would want to be a food delivery rider, she was prepared, but nervousness limited her to a simple explanation: her traffic offense had led to jail time and the revocation of her lawyer's license.
No further questions were asked. They told her to go home and wait for a reply. She knew the interview might have gone poorly. Emerald City had a dozen or so companies seeking food delivery riders, and she had applied to them all. She wasn't sure any would hire her; she felt exhausted. It was as if staying alive was tiring. Perhaps the events following her release from prison had left her physically and mentally drained.
That evening, during dinner, Jason suddenly asked, "You applied for a food delivery rider job today?"
Grace was shocked, nearly dropping her chopsticks.
Jason smiled. "Why the surprise? I received a call from the boss today. She said you applied, and wanted my opinion."
Grace was silent. The interviewer hadn't specifically asked about the car crash victim. She'd thought her silence would keep it hidden. She hadn't known the company's boss would call Jason personally. This was a harsh blow.
"Now, what should I say to her?" Jason asked.
Grace's lips pursed, but her mind was clear. Why would a boss call about a rider applicant? They could simply reject her application. They probably called to curry favor, assuming she'd killed Jennifer Atkinson and that Jason would hate her. By revealing her whereabouts, they hoped to ingratiate themselves with the Reed family and please Jason.
The thought made Grace sick.
"Do you want me to talk to them and get them to hire you?" Jason continued.
"No," Grace said quickly.
Jason raised an eyebrow slightly. "You don't seem to like that company very much. I don't either. In that case, I'd better get rid of the company."
