Chapter 326
As the boss, she handled the cash register, served food, cleaned tables, and seemed to do everything. When busy, she had no time to spare. Her abilities might be limited, but she gave her son the best she could.
Around three o'clock, the restaurant received an order for pineapple buns and milk tea. Grace was distracted only when she saw the address.
"What's wrong? Is there a problem?" Kyla Corbyn, who had prepared the order, found Grace staring blankly at the receipt.
"It's nothing," Grace replied, taking the buns and tea.
The delivery address was her former law firm. Delivering there meant encountering former colleagues. She had been a successful professional there; the thought of seeing them now filled her with embarrassment.
A hint of bitterness surfaced, but she'd chosen this path, and such situations were inevitable. Could she, in her current circumstances, not face them? 'I just have to get used to it,' she thought, placing the food on her electric bike and driving off.
The closer she got, the more familiar the roads became. Arriving at the entrance, she parked and looked up at the modern building. Once, she had been so ambitious, dreaming of one day starting her own firm. Now, it all felt unreal.
She took the order and pressed the floor button. At the glass doors, she called the number on the order. A young woman, seemingly a recent graduate, answered.
"Thank you," the woman said, taking the order.
Just then, the receptionist recognized Grace and exclaimed, "Hey, isn't this Grace? You…" She glanced at the food, then said in surprise, "Are you delivering food?"
"Yes," Grace replied.
The woman who received the order asked the receptionist, "Do you know each other?"
"Of course, Grace used to work here. She was famous for…" The receptionist trailed off, her expression shifting from surprise to sympathy.
Grace smiled and left. In the elevator, she saw the receptionist and new colleague chatting, likely about her. She was relieved to have avoided encountering many former colleagues.
It was past ten when Grace returned to Reed Residence after a long day. She wanted to go straight to her room, but remembering Jason's earlier request, she knocked on his door. Since he wanted a goodnight, she would oblige.
The door opened, and Jason stood there. "You're back."
"Yes. Well… Good night," she said, returning to her room.
