Chapter 341
He wasn't in the room. Where could he be? Downstairs?
However, Jason wasn't downstairs either. After searching the main house, Grace went outside.
The Reed Residence was vast. Besides the main house, there were servants' quarters, gardens, pavilions, and ponds. Having lived there for so long, she'd never explored it thoroughly and had no idea of its true size.
It was nearly midnight, and darkness enveloped the grounds, broken only by a few scattered lights. A chilly night wind prompted Grace to pull up her collar. She wondered why she was searching for Jason. Was she afraid something had happened to him?
What could possibly happen to him at the Reed Residence?
Finally, she concluded it was because he'd saved her life that day; she simply wanted reassurance.
She spotted a small detached house ahead, its windows brightly lit. Only upon approaching did she see a plaque that read, "Mourning Hall."
Grace was startled. She gently pushed open the door and entered a spacious antechamber. A framed black-and-white photograph of a man hung on the wall directly ahead.
He was handsome, with a scholarly air and gentle eyes. He resembled Jason, though Jason's beauty was more striking. Perhaps it was their eyes; the man's eyes were more like Old Master Reed's, unlike Jason's amorous gaze.
Grace had her answer: this was probably Jason's father. She hadn't expected him to look so gentle.
She knew only that Jason's mother had left him and his father. She hadn't given it much thought then; she'd seen similar situations at the law firm and in case studies.
However, seeing the photograph, everything felt different. Would a woman ever regret that the man had died so suddenly?
A voice broke the silence. "What brought you here?"
Grace jumped, whirling around to see Jason standing a short distance away, his dark eyes fixed on her.
"I… I was looking for you," she replied.
"Looking for me?" He raised an eyebrow, approached her, and asked, "What do you need?"
She bit her lip. There was nothing. She'd simply been afraid something might have happened to him.
"Hmm?" His eyes remained on her, awaiting her answer.
