Chapter 355
He stared intently at her hands, clasped in his as if sharing her joy. He looked up, catching her happy smile. A pang of jealousy struck him; it wasn't for him, but for Grace. Clearly, Grace was far more important to her.
In the car, Brian leaned back and gently rubbed his temples. His secretary, also in the car, said after a phone call, “Mr. Hart, the jewelry Miss Cummins selected costs $20 million. Should she keep it?”
The $20 million price tag prompted a call from the jeweler. Brian replied casually, “Since she chose it, let her have it.”
“All right,” the secretary replied, relaying the message. However, she secretly thought Miss Cummins was shallow. Their relationship was brief, yet she seemed eager to join high society, frequenting jewelry and luxury stores, striving for a socialite image. She charged everything to Mr. Hart's card.
The woman was impatient; the higher she climbed, the harder she would fall. Mr. Hart usually ignored overly eager ex-girlfriends. This time, surprisingly, he showed little reaction.
Was it her newness? the secretary wondered. But she doubted Evelyn had captivated him. If he truly cared, he wouldn't let her choose her own jewelry and remain so calm.
“Miss Cummins’s bills are mounting; nearly $30 million so far,” the secretary felt compelled to remind him.
“Is that so?” Brian slowly looked up, half-smiling at his secretary. “Why are some—”
“Miss Cummins is probably grabbing whatever she can,” the secretary finished.
“What a bore. Perhaps they'll catch nothing,” Brian said, turning to gaze out the window.
While $30 million was insignificant, he'd always spent generously on girlfriends, considering it compensation. His previous girlfriends sought money, wealth, fame—but they were more skillful; at least they didn't treat him like a sugar daddy.
It didn't matter. He was keeping Evelyn to learn more about Grace's past.
