Chapter 388

“It seems I was right the other day. It was you,” Brian said calmly, glancing at Kyla Corbyn. “Did you come to beg me not to tell Martin Weiss about seeing you?”

Kyla Corbyn shuddered at the mention of “Martin Weiss.” She hadn’t heard the name in a long time—a name she both loved and hated with all her heart. Now, she only wanted to escape it and live a quiet life.

“Yes, I know I’m not qualified to speak to you. I just hope you’ll take pity on me and forget you ever saw me!” Kyla replied, gritting her teeth. Her tone was so humble she would have knelt if Brian had asked.

“You should know he’s been searching for you all these years,” Brian said.

Kyla pursed her lips, silent. He was searching for her only because he thought she hadn’t suffered enough for escaping the miserable life he’d given her, for her unexpected disappearance.

“Please, Mr. Hart. You must know something of our history. I just want peace. I’m not harming anyone, nor do I wish to be hurt,” Kyla implored.

“Not harming anyone?” Brian chuckled lazily. “However, everyone seems to know you caused Martin Weiss’s girlfriend to miscarry, killing a human life.”

Kyla clenched her teeth and closed her eyes in despair. It was a burden of guilt unfairly thrust upon her. Though she’d repeatedly denied it, no one believed her. The man she loved most had sent her to prison. As the police took her away, she’d asked, “Have you ever loved me, Martin Weiss?”

“How could I love you when I’ve only felt hatred? Kyla Corbyn, I want you to live your whole life in pain.” Those were his last words.

The man she loved most wanted her to suffer. What she’d thought was affection was hatred and revenge. She went to prison and later heard he was engaged to his girlfriend, while she was the wicked woman occasionally mentioned in the news.

“I… did not harm anyone!” Kyla whispered, her voice trembling, as if she were using her last reserves of strength.

Looking at Kyla, Brian’s mind flashed to Grace. He’d investigated her case and knew she’d also been imprisoned. The car accident… the documents showed Grace had pleaded not guilty.
