Chapter 388

โ€œIt seems I was right the other day. It was you,โ€ Brian said calmly, glancing at Kyla Corbyn. โ€œDid you come to beg me not to tell Martin Weiss about seeing you?โ€

Kyla Corbyn shuddered at the mention of โ€œMartin Weiss.โ€ She hadnโ€™t heard the name in a long timeโ€”a name she both loved and hated with all her heart. Now, she only wanted to escape it and live a quiet life.

โ€œYes, I know Iโ€™m not qualified to speak to you. I just hope youโ€™ll take pity on me and forget you ever saw me!โ€ Kyla replied, gritting her teeth. Her tone was so humble she would have knelt if Brian had asked.

โ€œYou should know heโ€™s been searching for you all these years,โ€ Brian said.

Kyla pursed her lips, silent. He was searching for her only because he thought she hadnโ€™t suffered enough for escaping the miserable life heโ€™d given her, for her unexpected disappearance.

โ€œPlease, Mr. Hart. You must know something of our history. I just want peace. Iโ€™m not harming anyone, nor do I wish to be hurt,โ€ Kyla implored.

โ€œNot harming anyone?โ€ Brian chuckled lazily. โ€œHowever, everyone seems to know you caused Martin Weissโ€™s girlfriend to miscarry, killing a human life.โ€

Kyla clenched her teeth and closed her eyes in despair. It was a burden of guilt unfairly thrust upon her. Though sheโ€™d repeatedly denied it, no one believed her. The man she loved most had sent her to prison. As the police took her away, sheโ€™d asked, โ€œHave you ever loved me, Martin Weiss?โ€

โ€œHow could I love you when Iโ€™ve only felt hatred? Kyla Corbyn, I want you to live your whole life in pain.โ€ Those were his last words.

The man she loved most wanted her to suffer. What sheโ€™d thought was affection was hatred and revenge. She went to prison and later heard he was engaged to his girlfriend, while she was the wicked woman occasionally mentioned in the news.

โ€œIโ€ฆ did not harm anyone!โ€ Kyla whispered, her voice trembling, as if she were using her last reserves of strength.

Looking at Kyla, Brianโ€™s mind flashed to Grace. Heโ€™d investigated her case and knew sheโ€™d also been imprisoned. The car accidentโ€ฆ the documents showed Grace had pleaded not guilty.
