Chapter 414

She was reminded of Brian helping her with her shoelaces yesterday. Was he jealous? Was Jason jealous? It was a thought Grace hadn't considered before, but it seemed sweet.

Kyla Corbyn looked out the window at the cloudy sky, the sun obscured by the clouds.

"By the way," Kyla Corbyn said, "Nelson's having surgery soon. My mother and I are going to the hospital to care for him for a few days, so I'll be closing the restaurant. Don't worry, you'll be paid as usual. I'll message you when we reopen."

"Sure," Grace replied. "Let me know when Nelson's operation is over. I want to know it went well."

"All right," Kyla Corbyn said, smiling. "I hope so too." Although closing the restaurant would affect business, her son's hearing was her priority.

Once Nelson had his cochlear implant, she would face the challenges of helping him learn to listen and speakโ€”difficult tasks, but ones she was ready to tackle. No matter how hard it was, she would do her best to help him live a normal life, filled with fewer obstacles.

When business slowed in the afternoon, Kyla Corbyn went to the house behind the restaurant and found Nelson asleep in Mrs. Corbyn's arms. Mrs. Corbyn was gently putting him down on the bed.

"Why are you here?" Mrs. Corbyn asked.

"I just wanted to see Nelson," Kyla Corbyn said.

"Don't you see him enough? He'll be hospitalized tomorrow. You'll be with him almost 24 hours thenโ€”that should be enough," Mrs. Corbyn said, smiling, clearly anticipating the surgery.

Kyla Corbyn looked at her son with love. "I did him wrong. If I hadn't taken that wrong medicine, maybe he wouldn't be deaf."

"It's not your fault. It's that wicked woman's fault!" Mrs. Corbyn said angrily.

"I was stupid, I didn't see through her," Kyla Corbyn said. "Nelsonโ€ฆ he should be God's favored one, but he has a mother like me. Look at how he's living now."

Mrs. Corbyn looked at her distressed daughter. "What are you saying? Nelson is lucky to have you as a mother. Enough, stop discouraging yourself. It's his surgery day tomorrow. After the surgery, we still have a lot to do!"

"All right, I'll stop!" Kyla Corbyn kissed her son's cheek and returned to the restaurant.

But back at the restaurant, she saw someone unexpected and was horrified: Brian. She hadn't expected him to reappear. Why was he there?

Kyla Corbyn subconsciously thought of the video she'd seen yesterdayโ€”Brian's attitude toward Grace, the way he looked at herโ€ฆ Was he there because of Grace?

Brian's next question confirmed her suspicions.
