Chapter 53
โEven in the past, finding a job to support myself was incredibly difficult,โ Grace said.
โBut you canโt waste your years on this job! How will you find a good husband doing this?โ Claire exclaimed.
Grace smiled at Claire, who truly meant well. Marriage was the biggest concern for women like Claire.
โChase doesnโt seem to mind your past,โ Claire continued. โAre you sure you donโt want to consider him? Honest men like Chase are rare nowadays.โ
โNo, itโs impossible for us,โ Grace replied, determined not to give Claire false hope and invite interference. That would only end badly for everyone.
Claire hesitated before asking, โGrace, do you consider Chase beneath you because heโs just a driver? After all, your ex-boyfriendโโ
โClaire!โ Grace interrupted. โThatโs not it. Iโve been through so much; Iโm not ready for a relationship.โ
โOh, you child!โ Claire sighed. โIf you remain unmarried and alone, you might not feel it now, but the loneliness of old age without childrenโฆ itโs unbearable.โ
Grace smiled wryly. โChildrenโฆ Iโm afraid thatโs wishful thinking for me.โ
It wasnโt just the difficulty of conception; she wasnโt wealthy or powerful enough to ensure her childrenโs safety. Would she subject them to ridicule and bullying? Children could be cruel. She suspected that if her past became known, her children would be targeted. She wouldn't allow that.
After work, Grace and Claire packed up their tools and returned to the Sanitation Service Center.
While returning her tools, Grace initially avoided Farah Steele, her frequent tormentor. However, as she was washing her hands, she saw Farah and Chase at the sink.
โGraceโs been to prison, Chase. Why are you still interested in her? Am I not good enough?โ Farah demanded indignantly.
Chase replied, unhappy, โMust you bring up her prison sentence every time you speak? Grace was driving carelessly; she didnโt intend to hurt anyone!โ
โShe was driving under the influence! How is that unintentional?!โ Farah retorted. โSheโs a witch! And youโre a fool under her spell!โ
โIโd gladly be under her spell!โ Chase answered.
Grace overheard their conversation and instinctively wanted to avoid them. But as she turned to leave, Farah spotted her and shouted, โGrace, you shameless eavesdropper!โ
Grace sighed and stopped. โThis is a public area of the Sanitation Service Center. I was washing my hands. If youโre worried about being overheard, find a private room,โ Grace said.
Farah glared at Grace, then hissed a nasty remark before leaving: โJust wait!โ
Grace smiled faintly. โI heard that a lot in prison.โ
Chase looked at Grace uneasily. โDonโt let her words bother you.โ
โI wonโt,โ Grace said. Perhaps meeting Chase like this was a blessing. โThis is my life, Chase. The ridicule, the gossipโฆ itโs not easy.โ
โIโll defend you,โ he vowed, his eyes earnest. She wished she were different, the kind of woman Chase deserved.
โI know you would. Youโre a good man.โ
โSeriously, Grace. Give me a chance.โ
She shook her head. โI donโt want you to waste your time on me. Like she said, Iโve been to jail. Iโm not good enough for you.โ
โI donโt care,โ he said quickly.
Meeting her confused gaze, he explained, โIโฆ I know youโre a good woman, so I really donโt care about your past.โ
