Chapter 63

Sean looked at his girlfriend in her gorgeous dress, but his mind was on the previous nightโ€”on Jason and Graceโ€™s faces. Had Jason seen him? There'd been a moment when Jason's gaze seemed knowingly fixed on the darkness. Had it all really happened?

Even now, it felt like a dream. Could it be true? The most powerful, influential, and wealthy man in the city slumming it with his ex-fiancรฉe, a woman convicted of murdering Jason Reed's first love? How was this even possible?

Lily frowned, noticing his absent-minded expression. "What's wrong with you? You've been spaced out for two days. If you don't want to get engaged, just say it."

Sean sighed, then quickly smiled. "Of course I do. Why wouldn't I? You know my heart belongs only to you."

"Only to me?" Lily raised an eyebrow. "You have no feelings left for Grace?"

Sean's body stiffened. Lily was sharp, and cruel. He said uncomfortably, "Why bring her up? We broke up years ago. How could I still have feelings for her?"

"Then why did you help her find a job?" she asked.

"I pitied her," he replied.

"Pity her? You should pity my sister! Because of Grace, she lost her life," Lily sneered. "If you dare to 'pity' her again, and Jason Reed finds out, don't blame our family for not supporting you."

Sean's mind raced, considering the possibilities surrounding his ex and her new acquaintance. Before, he wouldn't have questioned Lily's words. But now Grace's situation might not be as it seemed.

Hesitantly, he asked, "Lily, has Jason become involved with anyone new recently?"

"Of course not," Lily immediately denied. "Jason famously avoids women. He's as cold as ice. It was a miracle Jennifer thawed his heartโ€”and she was the only suitable partner for marriage." The way she said it made it clear she viewed the engagement to her sister as a strategic alliance between wealthy families. "Jason Reed hasn't had another woman in three years!"

The outside world believed Jason loved his sister deeply, but only the Atkinsons knew the truth. They wouldn't correct the misunderstanding; in fact, they encouraged it. The Reed family's protection enhanced their own standing and benefits.

Sean said nothing.

As they left the dress shop, a car pulled up. Both recognized Jason's personal secretary, Terrence Klein.

"Secretary Klein, why are you here?" Lily asked curiously.

Sean felt a tightening in his chest.

Terrence smiled slightly. "I'm here to invite Mr. Stevens to a meeting. Mr. Reed wishes to see you." His eyes met Sean's.

Sean's hunch was confirmed. He exhaled. "Okay, I'll go with you." He didn't dwell on how Terrence knew their location or his impeccable timing.

"Babe, what's going on?" Lily demanded.

Sean started toward the car. "We'll discuss it later, if it concerns you."

He got in with Terrence, leaving Lily sputtering. The invitation was clearly for him alone.

Sean didn't look back. As they drove, he asked haltingly, "Secretary Klein, do you know why Mr. Reed wants to see me?"

Terrence met his gaze in the rearview mirror. "You're about to find out"
