Listen to this chapter:

“I’m not sure what you look like. But what does she want to do with me? Whatever it is, I’ll definitely handle it attentively. Worst-case scenario, if I get fired, I’ll just go back to my old job,” Yarrick said with a shrug.

Christina paused for a second, then shook her head. There was no point overthinking things.

“Yeah, you’re right. It’d be a shame if you quit right after joining. This company has great benefits.”

It was 5:50 pm. Yarrick stood up from his desk, a nervous flutter in his chest. He made his way to the sixth floor, to the HR department, and stopped outside the department head’s office. He took a deep breath and pushed open the door.

“Ms. Chapman? You asked to see me?”

Christina, a woman in her early thirties, sat behind the desk, smiling politely at him.

“Ah, Mr. Sutton. Please come in and close the door behind you,” she said, gesturing for him to sit across from her.

“Yes, I’m Yarrick Sutton. You asked to see me?” he asked, shutting the door and stepping inside.

“Please have a seat. Do you know why I’ve called you in?” Christina asked.

“I’m not sure.” Yarrick shook his head in confusion. He had only been with the company for a week. He barely knew anyone. How could he possibly guess why the head of HR wanted to see him?

Christina gave a faint smile as she opened the folder on her desk. “I took a look at your résumé just now. Tell me, that self-evaluation at the bottom—is it accurate?”

She slid the document across the desk toward him. Yarrick glanced down, feeling a little awkward.

“Strong communication skills, excellent listener, handles pressure well, outstanding physical endurance…”

It was just a vague description that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. He merely used words like strong, excellent, and outstanding to get the reader’s attention. “For the most part, yeah,” he replied, shrugging slightly.

He wasn’t lying. In his four years at university, he had worked jobs that forced him to interact with all kinds of people and in all kinds of situations. He had toughed it out through everything. He didn’t even back down when a woman tried to court him by force.

Christina couldn’t help but laugh softly.
