Their eyes widened with curiosity and disbelief. Some were red with envy, while others were…
The place had already been buzzing when the appointment email came in. Now, with Yarrick back, the whole department was in a frenzy over him.
“Hey, Yarrick, come on. Let’s have a quick chat,” Ethan said with a wide smile, patting him on the shoulder like an old friend. Even the way he addressed him had changed.
Yarrick nodded politely and followed him into the office.
“Come on, Yarrick! You gotta tell me how you landed something like this. Why did the president pick you?”
“Uh… Honestly, I’ve got no idea. The head of HR just called me in out of nowhere. I was as confused as anyone. Didn’t even ask you about it,” Yarrick glanced at Ethan’s expression and scratched his head sheepishly.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
“So, what’s the president like? I haven’t met her yet, and I’m feeling a little uneasy.”
“Our president is a total knockout. Why do you think I’m so jealous of you, hah?” Ethan joked.
“I mean, I’ve heard she’s beautiful, but what about her personality? Is she easy to talk to?”
He honestly didn’t care that much about looks. He already had Hailey. No matter how stunning the president might be, it wouldn’t change anything for him.
“She’s actually really easy to get along with, and she’s single, my friend. You’re one lucky guy!”
“Don’t say that! I’m just a fresh grad. There’s nothing special about me. Why would someone like her ever look my way?”
“Hey, you never know,” Ethan said with a sly grin, knowing it was clear he knew a lot more than he was letting on, but he wasn’t about to spill the details. “Well, Yarrick, don’t be a stranger. Let’s keep in touch, alright?”
That short chat was Ethan’s goodbye.
Yarrick quickly headed back to his desk to start packing up. After a few polite goodbyes to his teammates, he grabbed his suit and walked out.
He didn’t stay in his new office for very long before heading back out again. This time, he took the elevator down to the parking lot. He pressed the unlock button on the key fob, and a sleek black car lit up nearby.
He opened the door and slid into the driver’s seat.
There was still a faint floral scent inside, probably left behind by the previous secretary. She had good taste, no doubt.
With a deep purr, the engine roared to life, and Yarrick pulled out of the garage.
This car is way better than those chunky vans from driving schools. He cruised through the city, enjoying the ride. But he didn’t stay out too long. He took the car out for a quick spin and headed back.
As the newly appointed secretary to the president, he couldn’t be gone for too long. People might already be looking for him. His employer, various departments, subsidiaries, and executives might need him at any time.
After all, with a position like this, he wasn’t just anyone anymore.
The next morning, Yarrick and Michael arrived at the office together. After grabbing breakfast, they headed to his office. Time passed slowly, and 10:00 am finally arrived.
Yarrick had already saved the president’s number. Once it was time, he hit the dial button, and the call connected quickly.
“Hello?” a mature woman answered the phone softly.
“Good morning, Ms. Jardon. This is Yarrick.”
“Oh, you’re Yarrick. Hello!”
It was clear she already knew who he was, and he could sense that she was smiling.
“Yarrick, Ms. Chapman already told you a bit about my situation. Because of health issues, I won’t be going to the office for a while.”
“Yes, Ms. Chapman has given me a brief explanation.”
“Good. For now, I’d like you to take the next couple of days to familiarize yourself with each of the department heads here at headquarters. You can get the full list from Ms. Chapman in HR.”
“Understood, Ms. Jardon. I’ll start right away,” Yarrick complied obediently.
“Excellent. Once you’re up to speed, contact me again. Come over in person and have a chat.”
He was quite intrigued by what the hell she planned for him, but he knew this was a great opportunity.
