Chapter 37

“I gave ML Campbell my contact information earlier, and you memorized it,” Quinn explained softly.

Cameron nodded, understanding she had turned to him as a last resort. Quinn, suppressing her gratitude, spoke again. “Mr. Sumon, thank you so much for coming to get me so late. I really appreciate it.”

“Enough. Close your eyes and rest,” Cameron cut her off. He hadn’t driven hundreds of miles in the middle of the night just to hear her talk.

“I’m not tired. I can keep you company for a bit. Driving late at night can be dangerous,” Quinn offered helpfully. Her kind offer, unfortunately, was met with irritation.

“I prefer quiet car rides,” Cameron replied. He turned on the car’s stereo, filling the silence with soothing cello concertos.

Quinn closed her eyes and drifted off. When she awoke, they were in downtown Yatra. It was 10 a.m., and the streets were nearly empty.

“Are we here?” she asked, gazing at the towering buildings outside.

“Where are you staying?” Cameron asked, his voice hoarse and his eyes bloodshot from fatigue.

“Huh?” Quinn was momentarily confused.

“Where are you staying?” he repeated, his tone edged with impatience.

Realizing she had nowhere to go and no money for a hotel, Quinn’s voice quivered as she admitted, “I have nowhere to go.”

Cameron’s expression hardened. Worried he wouldn’t believe her, Quinn quickly explained her situation. “I really don’t have a place. All my money was stolen, and my phone’s dead. I haven’t been in touch with anyone from here for years; I don’t even remember their numbers, and my dad sold our…”

She wouldn’t have troubled him if she had any other option. With that, Cameron realized he was stuck with her. He let out a deep sigh and headed toward his own place.

Cameron’s mansion was in a quiet area near a small forest park in the city center. He had moved out of the Sutton residence partly for convenience, but mostly to distance himself from Meredith, who had never shown him much affection.

He drove into the garage, and Quinn followed him into the living room. As the lights came on, she noticed the interior’s gray and white tones and minimalistic décor. It had the feel of a bachelor’s house.

As Cameron hung up his coat, he suddenly turned to Quinn, who was standing awkwardly by the door. “Have you eaten dinner?”

It finally dawned on Quinn that she hadn’t eaten all day. She had skipped lunch at work after overhearing hurtful rumors about herself.
