Chapter 36

“Where are you?” Cameron’s deep voice cut through Quinn’s sobs.

“At Wonaville Station. The station manager said the last train to Yatran left at 1:30 a.m.,” she replied.

“Huh?” Quinn was taken aback.

“Just stay where you are. I’m coming to get you!” With that, Cameron abruptly ended the call.

Quinn handed the phone back to the manager, wiping her tears. She mumbled, “Thank you. My friend is coming to pick me up.”

“No problem. It’s good that someone’s coming for you. I’ll take you to the waiting area,” the manager offered, rising.

“He told me to stay right here,” Quinn replied hesitantly.

The manager was surprised, but he quickly understood. He chuckled and said, “He’s probably worried you might miss another train. It’s unsafe for a young woman to travel alone at this hour anyway. He seems like a responsible friend.”

Quinn pondered his words, wondering if Cameron was truly worried about her safety, or if he preferred to find her here. She settled into a chair in the office, patiently awaiting Cameron’s arrival.

An hour and a half later, the manager’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID before handing it to Quinn. “Is this your friend?”

Quinn nodded, quickly answering the call. “Mr. Sutton… I’m outside. Come out.” Cameron’s voice sounded weary, his reply curt, as if he had no desire to say more than necessary.

“I’m coming immediately,” Quinn hurried to reply. She returned the phone to the manager and thanked him again before following him to the station’s exit.

From a distance, she saw Cameron’s tall figure standing under the dim streetlights, his shadow stretching long across the pavement. He looked aloof and unapproachable.

Not wanting to keep him waiting, Quinn rushed to him, her cheeks flushed as she passed slightly. She stopped right in front of him, her twinkling eyes wide with gratitude as she murmured, “…Thank you.”

Cameron gazed at her pale face, his expression cold. “Get in the car,” he said flatly, then turned and walked toward the parking lot.

Quinn followed meekly behind him, feeling like a child who had been caught doing something wrong. As they reached the car, Cameron took the driver’s seat while Quinn slid into the passenger seat.

“Dad, you didn’t have to come yourself?” she added timidly.

“Where did you expect me to call at this hour?” he retorted, pulling out of the parking lot.

Quinn felt even guiltier, knowing she had caused him so much trouble. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be a burden.”

Cameron didn’t offer any words of comfort. Instead, he drove in silence. However, as the silence in the car grew almost comfortable, he finally asked, “Why did you call me?”

Caught off guard, Quinn hesitated before answering. “I tried Mr. Campbell first, but his phone was off.”

A flicker of disappointment crossed Cameron’s face as he realized he was the second option. Then, he pressed, “How did you get my number?”

It was his private line, known only to a select few, which was why he had answered the unfamiliar call in the first place.
