Chapter 79
Quinn looked up, and Caleb’s angry hand appeared in her sight. “I’m sorry. Please move aside,” Quinn said, lowering her head and avoiding his gaze. She tried to walk around him.
He suddenly grabbed her slender wrist and asked angrily, “Why did you come back?”
Quinn struggled, realizing her strength was no match for his. She had no choice but to say, “Please let go.”
“I asked you why you came back!” He jerked her toward him and glared. A predatory look filled his eyes, as if he were about to swallow her whole.
“What do you mean by that? Am I not allowed to come back?” She mustered the courage to meet Caleb’s gaze. She didn’t owe him anything. Why should she be scared of him?
“I see. I underestimated how shameless you are. I guess a woman like you, who sees love as a deal to be made, wouldn’t care about how others see you,” Caleb said sarcastically.
His words pierced Quinn’s heart like daggers, but strangely, they didn’t hurt her too much. Perhaps it was because she had suffered even greater pain two years ago and had become immune.
She grinned brightly. “Since you care so much about how others see you, Mr. Zeller, don’t you think you should stay away from me? What will you do if your fiancée sees you holding my hand and misunderstands again?”
She wrested free of his grip and rubbed her wrist, which ached where he had clutched it. “It seems like nothing about you has changed in the past two years since we’ve met, except that you’re now more sharp-tongued than ever.”
“Quinn, I’m warning you. Stay far away from me and don’t appear in my sight again. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee that I won’t do anything to you,” Caleb warned in a low voice, his teeth clenched.
Quinn looked at his contorted, enraged face, and her heart grew cold. “You worry needlessly, Mr. Zeller. If I’d known you would be here today, I would never have attended this gathering. Sorry about that. If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave.”
She walked outside without looking back. Caleb gazed at her proud, erect figure. He clenched his fists tightly and gritted his teeth. Why? She was the one who had betrayed him back then, who had been so high-and-mighty in front of him. That damn woman! She had betrayed their love and made him feel the hurt of betrayal by a woman for the first time. How could she have the audacity to…?
Quinn had no idea how she managed to walk out of the bar. She felt as if she were about to suffocate, and she was trembling violently. She pulled over to the side of the road and flagged down a cab. After getting in and closing the door, she finally felt the tension release. The tears she had been holding back began flowing down her cheeks.
She had thought that even though they no longer had the relationship they once had, she and Caleb would still be able to greet each other in a friendly manner. It was clear that she was wrong. Even though two years had passed, Caleb clearly hadn’t forgiven her at all. Perhaps from the moment they broke up, all he felt toward her was unending hatred.
It was past 10 pm by the time she got home. When Hilda saw how pale she looked, she sensed something was wrong and rushed to help. “What happened, Ms. Lawson? Are you sick?”
Quinn waved her hand lightly. “I’m alright, Hilda.”
“Sutton is back. He’s in the study right now,” Hilda said in a low voice.
Quinn was startled. Was Cameron back? He came back early today.
Quinn went to the study upstairs and pushed the door open gently. Cameron was sitting at his desk, the lamp on, intently reading the documents he held.
