Listen to this chapter:

Zoe pinned the note sarcastically and walked out. Quinn watched her retreating figure, her hands balling into fists as they hung loosely by her sides. She was trembling violently.

She turned and saw the invitation lying quietly on the table. She reached out to take it and put it in her bag. She knew she would have to visit the Jarman residence. She had to go and ask her mother if she regretted abandoning Quinn and her siblings!

When she got home, Quinn felt as if she were about to collapse from exhaustion. She felt terrible, and even felt nauseous. Hilda sensed something was wrong, so she quickly asked if Quinn was unwell. Quinn only said she was fine before heading upstairs to rest in her room.

When she woke up and got ready to get out of bed, she realized that Cameron was back and was leaning against the headboard. He was reading a book intently. She propped herself up into a sitting position and looked rather foggily at him. Her voice was slightly hoarse. “When did you get back?” she asked.

“After you fell asleep,” he said. He put down his book. “Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t feeling well?”

“Don’t listen to Hilda. I’m just a little tired. I’m not well at all,” Quinn smiled slightly and leaned her head against his shoulder. “You have so many things to worry about every day. It’s tiring enough. You don’t have to worry about…”

“Are you really okay?” Cameron still seemed worried.

“Not really,” she said, holding her stomach.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m hungry.” Quinn giggled at him and flung the covers aside. “I’m going downstairs to get something to eat.”

The next morning, Quinn saw several intricately wrapped gifts on the chaise longue. Where had they come from? She got out of bed, looking curious, and walked over to the chaise longue. Hilda pushed the door open and entered. She was all smiles. “You’re awake, Ms. Lawson.”

Quinn pointed to the gifts. “Where did they come from?”

“Where else could they have come from? They’re obviously gifts from Mr. Sutton to you,” Hilda answered.

“You? Why would he give me gifts all of a sudden?” Quinn asked as she tore open the wrapping on the box atop the pile. She saw a glamorous, ethereal-looking haute couture dress by…

“This dress looks wonderful. If you wore this, you’ll look like a fairy,” Hilda said admiringly.

Quinn opened the second box. There was a pair of beautiful heels inside. The third box was a luxurious purse encrusted with diamonds. When she opened the last box, Quinn felt as if she had been dazzled. It was a set of jewelry made of pink diamonds.
