Listen to this chapter:

“You’re welcome. Are you feeling better now?” Quinn asked.

He nodded lightly. His face was still a little pale, but it wasn’t as alarming as before. “Heel mach better.”

“I’ll help you up so you can find a place to rest. Constantly sitting there was a bad idea, after all.”

The man nodded. “Thank you.”

He stood up with Quinn’s help. He looked around and saw a gazebo nearby. “Let’s go there,” he said.

Quinn helped him over to the gazebo. After he sat down, she said, “I’ll get you some water.” Without waiting for his response, she turned and headed toward the busiest part of the yard.

The dessert table was filled with beautifully crafted food and drinks. Quinn broke through the crowd, grabbed a bottle of water, and was about to leave when she spotted Zoe nearby. She was arm-in-arm with Caleb. The two were smiling and toasting the guests.

To avoid crossing paths with them, Quinn quickly turned around to escape. However, her brows furrowed and her expression hardened; she was unaware that Caleb had already spotted her.

Zoe noticed the change in his expression and followed his gaze. She then saw Quinn.

“Why is she here?” Zoe asked, deliberately pretending to be surprised. She then said with a worried look, “Caleb, do you think she still hasn’t gotten over you, so that’s why she’s here to ruin our engagement party?”

“She wouldn’t dare!” Caleb’s face darkened even further as he spoke.

“Just look at how shameless her mother is. You can tell that she’s just as daring. After all, birds of a feather flock together,” said Zoe.

“I won’t give her the chance,” Caleb said through gritted teeth.

Meanwhile, Quinn had no idea that two pairs of eyes were fixed on her. She held the water with her head down, using the crowd as cover as she made her way back to the gazebo in the deeper part of the yard.

Because she didn’t take the same path she came from, she took a slight detour. As she crossed a small wall, two dark figures suddenly appeared; one of the men was short, while the other was tall.

“What are you doing here alone, babe? Why don’t you keep us company?” said the taller figure, Zach Evans.

Due to the dim lighting, she couldn’t make out his appearance. However, the sound of his voice was enough to make her feel disgusted.

“I don’t know you. Please get out of the way,” Quinn replied coldly.

“That’s fine. We’ll know each other after we’ve had some fun,” replied the shorter figure, Belam Wales. He then took a step forward to touch her face.

Quinn quickly stepped back and warned, “Don’t you dare! You don’t get out of the way, I’ll scream!”

“Oh, feisty, are we? Gonna scam, huh? Do you want money? Say it. How much do you want? Is it still a problem if we pay up?” asked Zach as he took some money out of his pocket. Exian chimed in, “Yeah! We’ve got plenty of cash. All you have to do is take care of us, I promise you’ll benefit from it.”

Quinn realized she’d run into a couple of thugs. She couldn’t believe something like this could happen at Zoe’s engagement party. However, it was clear that the Jakeman family’s social standing did not guarantee safety for everyone present.

She took several steps back. She wanted to escape, but she was wearing high heels. So, running was impossible.
