Chapter 87
“I’m putting you in a difficult position? Leslie Yost, you have some nerve! How have I treated you in the Jakeman family these years?”
Not only do you refuse to help me when I’m in trouble, but you’re even licking me while I’m down. You ungrateful trait!” the sharp voice yelled.
Hearing that voice, Quinn felt a sense of familiarity, yet she couldn’t believe it. After all these years, why had her once gentle mother turned into someone who spoke like a shrew?
She walked upstairs with heavy steps and immediately saw the door on the second floor. A man and two middle-aged women were blocking the way, keeping her elaborately dressed mother, Luna, trapped inside the room. She couldn’t…
She looked healthy and didn’t sound weak. She looked nothing like a sick person Zoe had lied to her about.
Luna continued berating the three people who were blocking her path. She accidentally glanced at the staircase and spotted Quinn standing there, frozen in place. Her voice gradually faded.
She probably couldn’t believe her eyes and was in disbelief. But when she noticed that Quinn was also staring back at her, she became certain that the young woman standing gracefully at the staircase was indeed her biological daughter.
“Quinn? Is that you, Quinn? What are you doing here?” Her voice trembled with emotion. Her expression wavered between joy and shock.
“Is this the life you wanted? You abandoned my brother and I just to live this kind of life in a family like this?” Quinn looked at her mother, and deep sadness filled her heart.
“No. That’s not it. It’s not what it looks like. They… they…” Luna tried to explain. She probably didn’t want Quinn to see her in such an embarrassing state.
Unfortunately, Quinn didn’t want to hear any of it. She finally understood why Zoe had gone to such lengths to ensure she attended the engagement party. She merely wanted her to see firsthand how undignified her mother’s life was now, to trample on her self-esteem.
Quinn turned away. She no longer wanted to stay in this place for even a moment. All she wanted was to escape.
She rushed downstairs, went out of the annex, and headed straight for the gate. However, after she took a few steps, she saw a person lying on the grass. He looked like he was panting and in pain.
Her mood was already terrible, so she initially didn’t want to bother. However, she heard a faint cry for help.
After struggling with her conscience, she couldn’t bring herself to ignore him, so she walked over.
She crouched down. “What’s wrong?” she asked cautiously.
“Medicine… my medicine…” The man was lying face down on the ground as he pointed weakly toward the grass.
Quinn looked toward the direction he was pointing and spotted a small pill bottle lying in the grass. Quickly, she bent down, picked it up, and handed it to him. “Is this it?”
“Yes. Please help me open it.” The man was speaking with great difficulty. He was propping himself up on one hand and straining to lift his head. His pale face was covered in beads of…
She quickly poured a pill into her palm. She then turned him over, propped his back against her, and brought the pill to his lips.
He pressed his pale lips to her palm, took the pill, and swallowed it.
After two minutes, his breathing gradually evened out. He shifted slightly, turning to look at her, and softly said, “Thank you.”
