Chapter 256
With that, Freya no longer looked at him and turned to leave. Matteo stepped forward, as if to stop her, but just then, his phone rang. He took out his phone, glanced at the caller ID, and paused. Watching Freya get into the car, he answered the call.
Johnny, seeing that Matteo had intended to stop Freya but then gave up, cast a glance at him and snorted, then turned and got into Freya’s car. Johnny hadn’t really understood what Freya and Matteo had been talking about earlier. Once inside the car, he asked Freya, “Where did he want you to go?”
Freya mentioned the upcoming birthday celebration for Old Madam Wilson. Johnny wasn’t aware that Old Madam Wilson was preparing for a birthday celebration. The Gray and Wilson families were on good terms, but with the Wilson family being so elaborate in planning the event, the Gray family should have received an invitation. However, Johnny rarely returned to his family’s main household, so he didn’t know about this.
After hearing what Freya said, he responded, “It’s good that you’re not going.” Then, he frowned and said, “Didn’t he already take Raven to the Wilson family’s old residence and introduce her to the family? He should probably bring Raven to the birthday event as well, right? If he’s bringing Raven, why does he need you to come? In fact, isn’t it better if you don’t go?”
Freya had thought about this too. But she believed that she and Matteo would have no more interactions in the future. She no longer cared about his relationship with Raven, and although she found it illogical, she didn’t dwell on it too much.
Johnny paused, then continued, “Could it be that when he brought Raven back to the old residence, the family didn’t approve of their relationship? He knows that Old Madam Wilson likes you and values you, and maybe he thinks that if you agree to come, the family will finally let go of their prejudice towards Raven, helping them be together?”
Freya paused, then said, “Maybe.” He heard, “No wonder he’s willing to lower his guard and come find you. He’s really…”
Freya didn’t say anything more and focused on driving.
Elsewhere, after a brief conversation, Matteo hung up the phone. Yet, Rex didn’t leave. When he saw Matteo hang up, he paused before asking, “Miss Brown?”
Matteo smiled. “Yes.” He put his phone back in his pocket and looked at him, saying, “Mr. Hardin, do you have any other plans? How about we grab a bite?”
Rex paused, looked at Matteo for a moment, then agreed, “Sure.”
Half an hour later, Matteo and Rex arrived at the restaurant. Matteo smiled and said, “Yesterday, I heard from my uncle that Mr. Hardin has agreed to meet him in a couple of days to discuss the new project?”
Rex immediately realized that by “uncle,” Matteo was referring to Raven’s father, Logan. He had heard before that Matteo paid a lot of attention to the Brown family, but he hadn’t expected him to know so much about their affairs. He casually replied, “That’s true.”
Matteo said, “I’m also quite interested in the project. I wonder if Mr. Hardin would mind discussing it in more detail with me?”
Rex immediately understood that Matteo wasn’t really interested in the project itself. He was worried that Rex might cause trouble for the Brown family. Rex sneered inwardly, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he casually replied, “Sorry, Mr. Wilson, but the project is still in a confidential stage, so we can’t discuss too much at the moment. I hope you understand.”
Freya wasn’t sure what Matteo and Rex discussed. After having dinner with Johnny, Freya returned to the company to continue her work.
On Wednesday, she received a call from Grandpa Yves, inviting her to dinner at his place over the weekend. He also mentioned, “Isabella will be there too.” Freya paused when she heard this, then replied, “Alright.”
On Friday afternoon, while Freya was in a meeting, her phone suddenly rang. She was about to pick it up when the call was abruptly ended. Still in the meeting, she saw that it was from an unfamiliar number, so she decided not to answer it. The person who called was actually Jane.
Since Wednesday, Jane had officially joined the Becker Group. She had called to tell Freya that she had started working at Becker Group and would be settling down in the capital. However, after dialing the number, she remembered something that Sophia had mentioned earlier about Matteo’s friends, like Harry, who didn’t like Freya, and no matter how much Freya tried to please them, they were unbothered. Yet, they easily accepted Raven.
If Jane told Freya about joining Becker Group, Freya would probably know that Raven was involved in this somehow. Jane realized that Freya might feel uncomfortable upon hearing this, so she hastily ended the call.
