“The Kenneth family?” The butler was slightly taken aback. A meaningful smile spread across Daxton’s face. “Although the Kenneth family is nothing to write home about, we’ve had many years of acquaintance, and with age, one tends to hold onto the past.” The butler found it odd. Ever since he had joined the Moore family decades ago, he had never seen Daxton have any contact with the Kenneth family. Moreover, every mention of the Kenneths was met with disdain. What had changed today for him to suddenly invite the Kenneth family to his birthday celebration? Daxton didn’t elaborate, and the butler didn’t dare ask further, simply proceeding as instructed.
Before preparing the guest list, the butler made a point of bringing Daxton the medicinal soup Olivia had prepared earlier. “Ms. Carter’s medicine has been effective, Mr. Daxton. You started regaining sensation in your legs not long after taking it. Perhaps we should consider visiting her hometown to meet that barefoot doctor she mentioned?” the butler slowly suggested. Olivia had exposed the Moore family drama and provided Daxton with a traditional medicine formula to detoxify his body. Daxton, initially skeptical, was surprised to find the medicine genuinely effective. “Olly is too busy now to travel. Let’s wait and see. Besides, I think the medicine she prescribed is already doing well,” Daxton said with a smile. “Right, send one of the Moore family’s trusted aides with the invitation to the Kenneths. I fear they might not believe it otherwise.” The butler nodded and without delay sent someone with the invitation to the Kenneth family.
When the invitation arrived at the Kenneth household, it was Brody who first received it. “Mr. Moore of the Moore Group has invited grandpa to his birthday in five days,” Brody said, looking baffled as he held the invitation. Years ago, when the elders were in charge, the Kenneth and Moore families’ businesses were almost constantly at loggerheads, skirmishing every few days. The feud was so intense that outsiders often wondered if there was a deep-seated vendetta between the Kenneth and Moore families. This state of affairs continued until Brody’s father, Andres, took over the Kenneth family, after which relations began to slowly improve. Even now, though peace had been restored between the two families, the idea of Daxton inviting their patriarch to his birthday was absurd!
Together, these two nearly made two hundred years, having fought a commercial war for half a lifetime. If they actually met now, would they not end up swinging their canes in a life-or-death battle? Andres, equally surprised by the invitation, would have doubted its authenticity had it not been delivered by a senior member of the Moore family personally. Andres and Brody, both puzzled, decided to bring the invitation to Walden’s study. Walden glanced at it and, without a hint of emotion, simply instructed Brody to leave.
Liliana, her face covered with bandages, happened to pass by. “Brody? I heard that the Moore family sent someone over with something?” Liliana had been living a nightmare lately. Brody and a pharmaceutical company had developed a treatment that slowed the deterioration of the skin on her face, allowing her to return home from the hospital. Just moments ago, Liliana had accidentally overheard a conversation between Andres and Elowen, learning about the sudden invitation from the Moore family to their grandfather. This couldn’t help but sound alarm bells in Liliana’s mind.
