Chapter 47
When Jennifer heard that Easton was having Xavier take her home, she was immediately displeased. Normally, Easton would take her home himself.
Unwilling to accept it, she chased after him, pouting, โEaston, you always take me home. Why arenโt you doing it today? Are you still thinking about Natalie?โ
โIf you are, let me remind youโit was because of Natalie that we were separated. Sheโs the reason you betrayed me and married herโฆโ she said.
โEnough. You were the one who left me back then, and we were never a couple, so there was no betrayal,โ Easton said.
โUnder my grandfatherโs pressure, I had no choice but to marry Natalie. Go home. I donโt want to hear any more of this.โ The irritation in Eastonโs eyes was clear.
Jennifer froze. It was trueโthey had never been a couple, so there was no betrayal. Easton had never promised to marry her. But he had never spoken to her in such a harsh tone before.
Seeing her tears, Easton softened a little. โJennifer, just go home for now. Iโll come see you tomorrow.โ
His softened voice made Jennifer think he still cared about her.
Thinking about those past days, she couldnโt stop her tears. โI love that man; how can I marry Easton?โ
Easton had grown up surrounded by darkness, and her presence had been a beacon of light for him.
At that time, the more attentive Easton was, the more repulsed she felt.
Jennifer believed she deserved someone better, and Easton, with his cold demeanor, seemed like heโd come from the depths of hell. She had barely dared to look at him directly.
It was only after being hurt that she understood Eastonโs value.
Obediently, she nodded and followed Xavier, leaving as she was told.
The banquet went smoothly. Maurice left his butler and assistant to handle the guests and took Natalie to a quiet spot for dinner.
True to his word, Maurice had prepared a deliciously fragrant roast chicken just for Natalie.
Once they sat down, Natalie drank two cups of hot water, finally soothing her dry throat.
Maurice watched her carefree, unpretentious manner, a gentle smile forming on his face.
Maurice was usually a calculating man, but faced with Natalieโs genuine nature, he always found himself smiling.
Not far away, his assistant, witnessing the softened expression on Mauriceโs face, stood with his mouth agape, unable to close it.
Natalie looked at Maurice and smiled apologetically. โMr. Chambers, Iโm sorry, but Iโm really starving right now, so Iโm not eating like a lady.โ
With that, she slipped on a pair of disposable gloves, tore off a drumstick, and began eating with enthusiasm.
Mauriceโs gaze flickered, a trace of disappointment in his eyes.
He thought that when a woman didnโt care about her image in front of a man, it meant she didnโt see him as a man, but rather as someone insignificant.
His expression tightened momentarily, but watching her enjoy her food so wholeheartedly, that hint of disappointment vanished.
He chuckled, reminding her, โTake it easy. Itโs all yours.โ
Natalie chuckled with her mouth full and said nothing, though she found his gentle voice incredibly pleasant, wrapping her in warmth.
โOkayโฆโ she mumbled with a nod.
After finishing one drumstick, with food in her stomach, her anxiety eased. She slowed down and, glancing up, noticed Mauriceโs intense gaze on her.
Natalieโs eyes flickered, and she gestured to the food in front of him. โMr. Chambers, why are you staring at me? Iโm not so delicious as spaghetti or crispy roast chicken. Hurry up and eat.โ
Maurice laughed, his gaze softening, making Natalie feel like a gentle spring breeze had brushed across her heart.
Smiling, he asked, โNatalie, havenโt you divorced Easton yet?โ
