Reborn to My Engagement Night Chapter 106 The Hypocritical Charade
Unconcerned with the consequences, Janessa directly stepped in, blocking their path.
Upon seeing Janessa, Jillianโs face immediately turned cold. After all, she had seen the comments on the forum about how Janessa had been behind all the schemes to set her up. So, at this moment, Jillian naturally couldnโt bring herself to feel happy.
Madelyn knew Jillian had to be feeling upset, so she quietly reached out to gently pat the latterโs back, wordlessly soothing her. Jillian felt a bit better at the action.
Then, Madelyn glanced at Janessa and asked nonchalantly, โWhy did you rush to catch up to us? Is there a problem?"
Casting a glance at Jillian, Janessa thought to herself, โWhat a despicable b*tch!โ However, on the surface, she ignored Jillian, instead turning her attention to Madelyn. โMadelyn, are you still mad at me?โ
As she spoke these words, her face had an aggrieved expression, as if she had been wrongly accused of something.
Madelyn looked on, finding it amusing. โWhat are you talking about? What reason would I have to be mad at you?โ
Upon hearing this, Janessa instinctively averted her gaze toward Jillian. In her mind, she was yelling, โIf you arenโt mad, then why are you so close with Jillian!โ The incident on the forum had clearly caused quite a stir, so everyone was well aware of the feud between her and Jillian. Yet, Madelyn was being surprisingly close with Jillian. Could it be that you want everyone to know youโre on her side?
On the surface, however, Janessa simply wore a pitiful expression. โIf youโre not angry, then why have you been ignoring me lately?โ With sorrow in her voice, she lowered her head and asked, โDo you also believe what they say about me? Is that why youโre distancing yourself from me?โ
Immediately, Madelyn questioned in her heart, โAre you not the type of person they say you are?โ However, on the surface, she seemed indifferent as she said, โRegardless, the forum is currently filled with negative comments about you. Youโve made so many mistakes, and now so many people are criticizing you. If I were to associate myself closely with you, wouldnโt I just be inviting trouble? Or are you trying to drag me into the mud with you and be at the receiving end of criticism?โ
Upon hearing these words, Janessa immediately shook her head anxiously. โMadelyn, you know thatโs not what I meant.โ
Madelyn sneered mentally, but she still nodded calmly. โAll right, stop overthinking. Iโve just been really busy lately, and thatโs why I havenโt had much time to contact you.โ
Busy?
Janessa couldnโt help but ask, โWhat are you busy with? What could she, a lady of leisure with no particular skills, possibly be busy with? Could it be that she was busy spending time with Sebastian?โ
It was infuriating! The mere thought of it sparked immediate anger in Janessaโs heart. In her heart, she warned Madelyn, โYou better watch yourself, or else I wonโt let you off easily!โ
โDo you really want to know what Iโve been busy with?โ Madelyn asked with a chuckle at that moment.
Janessa immediately nodded enthusiastically. โOf course, I want to know. We are the best of friends, after all. Iโm interested in everything you do.โ
Madelyn scoffed internally, โYou probably just want to watch my every move, donโt you? Well, it doesnโt matter since Iโm innocent and have nothing to fear. Since you want to know that badly, thereโs no harm in telling you."
โIf youโre so curious, you can come along. Iโll take you with me so you can see what Iโm up to.โ
Upon hearing these words, a wave of elation washed over Janessa. โSure!โ
Following that, Madelyn turned to Jillian and said, โYou should go home first. Iโll head over later.โ
โButโฆโ
Jillian was somewhat hesitant, casting a suspicious glance at Janessa as if she was terrified the latter would stir up trouble. Madelyn had no choice but to give her a comforting glance. The meaning behind her look was clear, โDonโt worry about me. Iโm fine.โ
Out of trust for Madelyn, Jillian had no choice but to give a slight nod before turning around and leaving. As she walked away, she kept glancing back, seemingly a bit uneasy. Madelyn once again bestowed upon her a comforting smile.
Janessa watched all this happen, which left her feeling extremely displeased. Unable to hold back; she complained, โMadelyn, didnโt I tell you to keep your distance from her? But why do I feel like your relationship with her is only getting better and better?โ
Janessaโs guess was correct. Indeed Madelynโs relationship with Jillian was getting better and better.
But how could Madelyn possibly tell her the truth? Thus, she casually responded, โNo, youโre overthinking it. I was just discussing some academic issues with her. You know I still need a lot of credit hours. If I donโt earn enough, I wonโt be able to graduate.โ
After speaking, she asked in return, โWhy, you donโt like it?โ
Caught in an awkward moment, Janessa hesitated for a bit before quickly breaking into a smile. โHow could that be? Since Jillian is your friend, then sheโs my friend as well.โ
โIs that so?โ Madelyn chuckled.
โOf course! I didnโt even get a chance to explain earlier. Regarding that post on the forum and the incident where Ivan ordered those boys to bully Jillian, I honestly had no idea about any of it. Madelyn, theyโve all wronged me. You must believe me!โ
The words spoken by Janessa sounded incredibly sincere as she drew a clear line between her and those incidents. Madelyn arched an eyebrow and let out a silent scoff.
However, she said with a profound understanding, โDonโt worry, I know it wasnโt you. After all, weโve known each other for so many years. Donโt you think I know what kind of person you are? The kind of person who could do such a despicable thing must have a truly wicked heart, donโt you think?โ
The last sentence was deliberate as Madelyn cast an intent glance at Janessa.
Upon hearing this, Janessaโs heart skipped a beat, but she still found herself exhaling in relief. โMadelyn, youโre truly wonderful. In times like these, youโre the only one still willing to believe in me.โ
Madelyn nodded before saying, โHowever, if thereโs a next time and you truly wish to apologize in person, I could help arrange that for you.โ
โReally? Thatโs absolutely wonderful!โ Janessa said with delight.
She thought to herself, "Madelyn is, as always, so foolishly gullible!"
Following that, Madelyn spoke. โRight, didnโt you want to see what Iโm up to? Letโs get going then.โ
Janessa nodded emphatically, in complete agreement.
Just then, Christopher seemed to appear out of nowhere. โHey, what brings you two here?โ
Madelyn immediately furrowed her brow in frustration, as if she were looking at a fool. This coincidence is just too contrived, isnโt it? Do they think Iโm a fool? Their act is completely transparent at first glance.
Yet, Janessa was still cheerfully performing. โChristopher, your timing is impeccable! Madelyn was just about to take me somewhere. Would you like to join us?โ
Naturally, Christopher nodded. โSure, itโs not like I have anything else to do. Letโs go then.โ
Observing the effort the two were putting into their acting, Madelyn didnโt really mind. However, a hint of a mischievous smile played at the corners of her mouth.
All right then. Since you insist on coming along, so be it.
