Chapter 177 Ulterior Motives
“Exactly.”
Originally, Jillian was merely observing the situation from the side, but at this point, she felt compelled to stand up. “Janessa, haven’t you always claimed to be her bestie? Why is it that now, you’re blaming everything on Madelyn? Are you trying to frame her?”
Janessa was at a loss for words, so stressed that she was on the verge of tears.
She frantically explained, “I’m sorry, Madelyn, I didn’t mean it that way. But… but I truly don’t have feelings for Christopher, and nothing improper has happened between us!”
Madelyn scoffed. “So, to prove your innocence, you’re shifting all the blame onto me? Janessa, is this your definition of a bestie?”
“L…” Janessa’s face turned ashen in an instant.
At that moment, the watching Yvette was utterly bewildered.
She had initially come to confront Madelyn, but now, her desire to question the latter had completely vanished. As she looked at the two people in front of her, she was at a loss, not knowing what was going on.
After a brief pause, she realized that the information she received was incorrect.
She immediately turned around, scolding her two lackeys, “You idiots!”
The two lackeys trembled in fear.
Following that, Yvette’s gaze darted back and forth between Madelyn and Janessa, her confusion turning into irritation. “Hey, you two. Which one of you is involved with my fiancé?”
Yvette was curious as to why the two of them spoke and acted as if Christopher was some kind of plague to be avoided at all costs.
Madelyn knew that, given Yvette’s nature, the latter would not give up easily.
Immediately, she made her stance clear, “Ms. Langdon, I must confess that I already have a boyfriend. Moreover, I am deeply in love with him, no less than you are with your fiancé. Therefore, under no circumstances would I attempt to steal your man.”
Janessa immediately responded. “Me too! My relationship with Christopher is purely platonic. Since this causes you concern, I’ll make sure to keep my distance from him in the future!”
Both individuals spoke with utter conviction.
Initially, Yvette was skeptical, but seeing the unwavering determination in both of them, she found herself wavering.
In the end, all she could do was let out a snort. “All that matters is that you both know where to draw the line.”

Originally, she had secretly arranged for the news to be leaked to Yvette, with the sole intention of setting Madelyn up.
In the end, she nearly fell into her own trap, filling her with frustration.
Next, seeing that Madelyn was still visibly angered, Janessa immediately came forward to explain.
“Madelyn. I can’t believe what she’s thinking. It’s as if everyone is desperate to be involved with Christopher.”
However, Madelyn scoffed coldly, not even bothering to acknowledge Janessa. She then pushed past the latter and walked out.
“Madelyn!” Janessa rushed forward, grabbing Madelyn’s hand. “Madelyn, I’m sorry. I got too worked up earlier. I didn’t mean to hurt you!”
Madelyn sniggered, turning around with a look of disdain. “Janessa, do you know what kind of person I despise the most?”
Janessa wore a look of utter bewilderment.
“What I truly detest,” Madelyn said angrily, her eyes hardening, “are those who act friendly toward me on the surface but harbor malicious intentions behind my back. Worse still, they don’t hesitate to stab me in the back when it matters!”
Upon hearing this, Janessa felt a jolt surge through her being.
She hurriedly explained, “Madelyn, I’m not that kind of person. I was just nervous a moment ago, afraid of being wrongfully accused. That’s why I said what I did. I didn’t mean it, Madelyn…”
“Enough, you should be consoling yourself instead!”
After Madelyn finished speaking, she turned around and walked away, no longer bothering to feign civility with Janessa.
In the afternoon, Madelyn packed up her belongings after class, intending to head to the combat training center.
Just as she reached the school gate, she ran into Yadiel.
Yadiel, as always, was dressed impeccably. Upon seeing Madelyn, he greeted her, “Madelyn.”
“Yadiel? What are you doing here?” Madelyn asked with a chuckle.
Yadiel approached, instinctively reaching out to tousle her hair. His smile was as warm as ever, giving off a pleasant aura.
Madelyn also shared a sweet smile with him.
“Where are you going?” Yadiel asked.
Madelyn chuckled. “I’ve recently signed up for a martial arts class, so I’m going for training now. Anything unexpected happens, I can protect myself.”
“That’s true.” Yadiel nodded in agreement.
Then, as if suddenly recalling something, he said, “By the way, Madelyn, do you know that Mr. Thornton is sick?”
Madelyn found herself momentarily stunned.
“It seems you’re unaware, aren’t you?”
Yadiel’s smile faded, explaining in concern, “Mr. Thornton has been bedridden for the past few days. If you have some free time, you should go and visit him.”
With that, Yadiel left.
Meanwhile, Madelyn’s heart sank.
Dad has fallen ill….
Madelyn could recall from her past life that her father had been in excellent health. Yet, one day, he suddenly fell ill.
Back then, Madelyn had thought that her father’s failing health was a result of the stress she had caused him.
However, in this life, Madelyn knew she hadn’t done anything to upset her father.

The more Madelyn thought about it, the more suspicious she became. Immediately, she quickened her pace, reaching the school gate where she hailed a cab to return to the Thornton residence.
Ten minutes later, at the Thornton residence, Madelyn hurried inside upon getting out of the car.
Upon entering the living room, she saw her stepmother, Regina, and stepsister, Eunice, already there. Both were lounging on the sofa, looking as if they had nothing better to do.
“What brings you back here?” Seeing Madelyn, both mother and daughter were instantly taken aback.
Madelyn stared at the two with a somber expression, a hint of anger lacing her words. “Dad is ill. Why didn’t anyone inform me?”
“We…” Eunice glanced at Regina, unsure of how to respond.
The experienced Regina immediately answered, “A married daughter is no longer considered part of the family. Now that you’re married into the Lockhart family, it’s certain that their affairs will keep you busy. Therefore, we wouldn’t want to bother you with matters concerning the Thornton family.”
“Heh, I suppose you two have ulterior motives then?” Madelyn remarked with a sarcastic tone.
Upon hearing these words, Regina was outraged. “Madelyn, what are you implying?”
Her answer triggered a strange flicker in the eyes of both Regina and Eunice.
Eunice hurriedly reassured her, “Madelyn, there’s no need to worry. Dad was just exhausted. He’s not in any serious condition.”
